So Velocity and Panning form part of the FX? I like a lot use velocity, retriggers and pan, so it’s impossible in one step have this 3 parameters, feels like a little bit limiting
Yes, still kind of bummed by only 2 fx columns, limited RAM and no battery. 8 tracks seems rather limiting too, because even though you can sequence different instruments in the same track, they’ll have to share the same note “off” command. This is no problem for short percussive one-shots where you don’t need the note "off’ command, but if you’re working with longer melodic samples, as soon as you note “off” one sample, all samples in that track will note “off,” unless they’ve developed some sort of column command where a sample ignores the note “off” command in the same track. But then you’ll only have one fx column left.
He mentioned something about having up to 5 minutes of sample time, so that’s better. Thing is, I like my long tape delay tails that fade away slowly which doesn’t suit limited RAM specs. Also, working with longer vocal takes will be difficult.
I’m sure it’s still going to be a rad device, but it’s definitely more of a sketchpad for me at this point, which is fine, just not what I hoped.
Considering what was made with what trackers in the 90’ had, I’d say this thing has a lot of potential in the right hands. We’ve alway preached that limitations improves creativity. Wait until more are in the wild and see what regular users come up with and let’s revisit the limitations. I understand this is no Renoise. But if nothing else it can be a sketch pad for something that can be finished/improved in a daw or Renoise with .mod being compatible in both. I’ve preordered. Anxiously waiting.
Indeed.
I like limitations as well, but there’s a fine line between limitations being inspiring, and limitations being, erm, too limiting, especially if you have a specific musical idea that you can’t execute.
And not to sound like a farty smarty pants, but trackers have been my main composing environment for over 20 years, so I don’t really need to see what people do with it in the wild to know what I’m up against with the limitations. Yes, I’ve squeezed out some my best tracks with these kind of limitations, it’s just that, when I saw that a hardware sampling “workstation” tracker was being released, I had hoped for a bit more power under the hood because, in many ways, the music I want to make now, doesn’t jive with the limitations that I used to be comfortable with. And I’m talking about this in terms of a workstation, where I can compose/arrange/mix in a single box.
Also, anyone can test Polyend Tracker’s firmware limitations, to see if it works for them, by setting up a song in Renoise with these same limitations in place.
can you resample the output while you’re in the performance mode because if you can’t record the performance mode into the sequencer itself it would be a shame to not even be able to resample it and be able to re-import the output as a sample?
Lost interest. Video reinstilled interest.
[damn it]
I know. It was impossible to look away and now i can’t unsee it
Love the random features on it. Makes for quick experimenting, instead of having to input every step.
One more little jam with the thing from yesterday evening :
I tried to talk me out of it but I think I have to preorder. too many features I generally love when making music are distilled in one package here
I am having this dilemma right now. Might just pre order and figure out what move(s) to make later…
approaching danger zone
First preorder I’ve ever done
Missing the instant gratification
Me too, but i’m waiting patiently
Screens in summer? Nah, I can wait until fall/winter …
Leaves preorder page again
but, but aluminum case! haha. I change my mind every 10 minutes, it seems. I need to free up that brain power now.
A couple things that stuck out to me from the Sonic State video were:
-Selection Rendering
-Export to Wav/Song Stems
The briefly speak on it, and I look forward to learning more about this.
The cool thing about a hardware tracker coming to market is that you can easily test drive the spec ‘limitations’ and feature-set in software first. Grab Renoise or Sunvox etc, create an 8 track song and off you go, minding the same ‘limitations’ and workflow/feature-set as Polyend’s and see if you jive with the workflow.
Renoise looks very intimidating to me…and only mouse to control all that power?
there are dozens of keyboard shortcuts. I imagine the workflow becomes very fast when you know a lot of them.
The hardware tracker looks still more fun to me, even though it’s much more limited. but that might be a good thing
