Dust cover? Pretty sure I didn’t get one in my Legoweltz AE unless I’m missing something incredibly obvious (quite likely…)!
Edited to add: doesn’t really bother me. Never used fabric dust covers before. Only a few deck savers from time to time. Wouldn’t mind a snug travel case for it though.
On the other hand, did anyone found cheap alternatives for the hard case? I mean it would be easy to adapt some small case matching the size of PT and then modify it with additional protective foam inside eventually. But i would hear any experience if there are any…
Did you experience any kind of pressure in the jogwheel with this case? Many say that the PT jogwheel is kind of sensitive and subject to damage easily…
It has foam in the lid, I guess you could add a extra piece of foam with a hole cut in it to put over the wheel, like the kind of hard foam you get in packaging.
Decided to move past my dislike of the plastic body and give it a shot. Powered up and started to load some samples into a project. Stuck arrow key. It sticks 10/10 times if you don’t manage to press in the upper left corner of the button. Tapping that corner unsticks it.
It would seem Polyend Tracker does not want to help me make tunes. I wanted one, but seems like a time to move on. Bummer.
My PT had some sticky keys the first day, just like my two Digitakts by the way… after using / rapidly pressing the buttons a couple of times it went away and is fine now! I also thought shit, will need to return this, but really happy it sorted itself out… it was caused by the plastic edges of the keys touching the metal top plate ever so slightly, however the plastic wears a bit with use and the problem seems to solve itself.
I got the case from PT. Advantage is that there is this cut-out for the wheel. Since they tell us even in the manual that the wheel axis is sensitive and can be damaged by too much force, I would in any case make sure that the wheel is not under stress and well protected, if the case is closed.
I like the case, because it fits tight to the geometry of the PT and the dust cover can be put on the PT as well. But I miss a pocket for utilities, which makes an extra bag or something equivalent necessary.
It’s not a flight-case for harsh environment or to sit on, though
I like it. I feel like it’s a little larger than it technically needs to be. I’m usually a “put a deck saver and throw it in a bag” guy, so a whole case is a little overkill for me. But it definitely feels safe putting my PT in luggage in it.
On the other hand, not the best for carrying just the PT around. No handles or anything and, like I said, probably a bit more margins around the edges than I think there needs to be.
The case is made from a shell that has molded inserts inside that precisely fit the PT so everything is very firm and secure. And as others have mentioned, the cut-out for the jog. On the whole I feel like it’s a pretty good value.
I’m currently running that mental exercise. I will probably overthink it and make the wrong decision! My limited budget keeps me full of scrutiny.
I have other gear I could/should dig deeper into, but would miss the tracker workflow option. If my MK2 knob was not so loose, I would have an all metal build PT sitting here now.
thanks, @jemmons and @soundrider – the Tracker is usually on the move within my house, on the stoop, when I am waiting at the shop for the car to get fixed (lol), and a few other random places.
I’ve asked Polyend some questions about whether to expect additional customs charges when ordering from the US (it’s not clear from their website), but I keep coming back to the jogwheel protection the case offers. It is damn expensive, no doubt. But, on the other hand, I move the Tracker around quite a bit, and take it in and out of its case 2-4 times a day.
I also like that I could put the case into my laptop bag, and consolidate my music “setup” into a laptop bag and one other bag for headphones, the NTS-1, and some other random accoutrement.
Yeah I think that had I not the chance to get a metal one, the news that they changed to plastic with the rubber coating put me off enough not to get one new. That said having used it now if the only option was plastic I still think it is good value and a great instrument even in plastic, but the rubber coating is a big concern for me, had too much sticky stuff!
….
Re: the encoder, I think that I expect that I will have to replace it at some point, because the encoder gets a lot of use, and due to the weighted dial. (which I love BTW)
It is a fairly simple part to replace. I think even if it had a bushing or bearing to support the dial it would not significantly extend the lifespan, based on my use of other gear which needed encoder replacements, like pots they just wear out.
MK1 square buttons metal case
MK2 rounded buttons metal case
MK3 rounded buttons plastic case with soft feel (TPE coating?)
AE square buttons metal case
I have an extra dust dover if it will brighten someone’s day. So if they don’t go back to metal, I’m thinking the mkI and MKII will be worth something on the used market. Speaking of the used market, I confronted someone on Reverb about selling a microcosm for $850 but of course they haven’t responded to me
But as far as what the 3 Trackers I have have come with (different boxes, dust covers or not), it’s hard to remember. I love working on mine and I get at the very least, an idea or song done every day. However, I really hope they get some of these problems taken care of. If/when they do that, I think the material they use will matter even less. For example, yesterday, all of the sudden, the right side of my output went all distorted. Submitted a bug report and a restart resolved it. Stuff like that needs to be fixed.
