Polyend Play / +

Your value dial encoder is a bit loose, wiggles?
Is it normal?
Thnks!

I am checking videos this days, as I am looking for a synth with 2 or more tracks

One question, I know Play is more a groovebox than a synth, but considering I will use it only as a synth… what’s the difference between this and Polyend Synth?

If you are only looking for a sound module snd don’t care about sequencing and srum or sample capabilities then the Synth is a better choice. Only thing the Play+ has over Synth is audio over USB. But that may change in the future.

I would wait before buying tho and let the device mature a bit.

Sequencing capabilities are important, such performance mode effects, being able to sequence an arpeggiator, etc… I am not sure if Synth does it like Play does

Play is a grid based step sequencer, Synth has an arp and classic old school sequencer (punch in notes, hold a key and the sequence plays back).

Synth is intended for performing live with your hands. As in playing the notes live. Or you fan sequence it externally.

Play as you said is a groovebox. So very different devices and whichever you prefer should be pretty clear.

Nice, I will keep looking videos… One last question, can you use the 8 tracks in Play as synth tracks? Or does it have some limits?

I don’t own the Play+ just the OG Play which didn’t have synths.

But as far as I know the structure is - 8 sample tracks + 8 midi tracks. Midi tracks can be assigned to be synth engines BUT the limit is 3 engines that share 8 voices.

Buu as I don’t own the device it would be better to check the manual for this answer.

The limitation is similar across all devices. You have up to 3 patches shared across 8 voices using up to 8 midi/synth tracks on the +. The Play+ & Tracker+ also have a chord mode where you can use a single midi track to programme in chords.

The other big difference is stem export. You can take stems off either the Tracker or Play and put them in your DAW but I am not aware this is possible on Synth.

Anyone have any acd, fat, vap and wtfm synth presets from their tracker+ / tracker mini and play+ that they would share?

More grids? YES. Polyend Medusa (at the top) just came in to join…

NOTE: So Mitch from polyend posted this on backstage a few minutes ago.

“We will stop offering Play+ upgrades at the end of January(Unless we sell out before that), so if you want to upgrade a Play to P+, I would recommend doing it now!”

Never made sense to me. I did the same upgrade by selling my OG and buying a mint used +.
Saved a couple hundred that way.

Hi guys, was wondering if the polyend play+ can do the following? Considering getting one to add to my sound pallette.

  1. Does it have 8 voices total between drums and synths? Or is it 8 drum voices + 8 synth voices?

  2. I know there’s no proper internal resampling but I know there is stem export. I was wondering if it’s possible to export a sample of the summed output of just two tracks if I want to “resample” a layered sound and load it into a sampler? Can I “resample” a layered drum sound for example that’s made using the percussion synth layered with a sample?

  3. Is the amp envelope really just an AD envelope? Or do the synths have an internal adsr amp control separate from that?

  4. How in depth is the parameter editing possiblity when making your own patches? Are they pretty in depth synths? Would you say they are more complex or less complex than digitone 2’s FM tone machine?

  5. How good is the percussion synth? Do you find yourself actually using it without swapping the kick or hats for samples?

  6. Overall for sound design is it at least equivilant to DN2 in terms of depth? Or does it offer more editing possibilities?

  7. are there parameter slides on locks?

  8. are there sound locks? (Different sample on each step for the sampler). What about a different synth machine per step?

  9. Are all synth parameters available to be trig locked? Or only whatever parameters are mapped to the knobs?

  10. For the USB muktitrack audio streaming, how does it work? Is it a separate pair of channels for each track? Or does it require some overbridge like plugin? I ask because I’d like to be able to route the audio to an ipad daw. any latency issues? And can the audio be routed back into the play+ via usb without feedback?

  11. is there any reason to want this over the DN2 that I already have? What about compared to a polyend synth?

  12. maximum steps per pattern. If its only 64 is it easy enough to bind the chaining of two patterns so they always play in succession (if I have an 8 bar pad loop for example).

  13. Is there really only one LFO per track? Are they as editable as elektron LFOs? Do you find this to be a limitation?

You’ll probably get more Play-related eyeballs asking in this thread:

Thanks, I’ll have a look in there

I have the original digitone. There are very different concepts. The Play+ sequencer is very powerful. And the best: It’s absolute fun. For me it’s a joy to make music with it. More, much more fun than digitone. It doesn’t have DN depth but it’s more focused on make music and jamming, not to spend time tweaking sounds.

I think you really need to read the manual or see some tutorials

Thank you for the comparison.

I’ve read the manual quite thoroughly but still some things weren’t totally clear in there . Prior to this I asked chat gpt how many voices the play+ has and it claimed that it has 8 sampler voices in addition to 8 synth voices. Given how gpt isn’t totally reliable, Is this actually true or is the total voice count only 8?

Also, if audio is sent out via USB does it travel back into the Play+? (As in if I process its audio with an ipad will I still hear the processed sound from plays+ regular audio output so I can connect the play+ to my monitors (instead of connecting the ipad to my monitors)

And my most important question, is the kick synthesis actually good and are the synthesized hats good? I’m super picky with grooveboxes, the kick needs to sound close to production ready for me. Syntakt and TR6s would be good examples of kicks I like. And syntakt hats would be an example of hats I don’t like

Yes, 8 sample polyphony and the same for Synths. 16 polyphony in total.

I don’t understand very well the second question, but you can record into the iPad and at the same time use the audio out to send the sound to monitors, etc. I’m almost sure talhat it’s possible.

For the third question, there is PERC. I think you need to see some videos and hear some audio to judge if it’s for you, but it’s a very versatile drum synth. And for me sounds great.

Thanks for clarifying, if it was only 8 voices total I probably wouldn’t have even considered it

Do you know if the perc synthesizer is the same as on polyend tracker? Because the video demos of the perc synth for play+ are very sparse (only found one and I don’t feel like the demo probably doesn’t do it justice), but for tracker+ there’s a couple.

I guess is the same. The other Synths are the same as tracker. One very good thing about perc is that it only uses 1 of the eight voices of the Synths. You program notes and each note is a sound. Bear in mind that you lost distortion and bitcrusher wut you have waveshaper. For me, it’s deep enough. Programming beats in Play+ (I mostly use the sample part for beats) is the fastest.

In the P+ manual there are a detailed overview of PERC
