Play is a grid based step sequencer, Synth has an arp and classic old school sequencer (punch in notes, hold a key and the sequence plays back).
Synth is intended for performing live with your hands. As in playing the notes live. Or you fan sequence it externally.
Play as you said is a groovebox. So very different devices and whichever you prefer should be pretty clear.
