Well that’s a shame… tnx for the info.
No one deserves death threats for sure but I don’t think the problem he highlighted is anywhere near as bad as he was making it sound. It is especially not the community at large, it was literally two examples he showed. And there were other valid criticisms in this thread but he only chose to showcase the post where someone called him a shill.
He has a history of not accepting criticisms and then pretending he’s the one being bullied. He’s done this several times. I’ve mostly just ignored it but he can’t post a video where he’s claiming people are toxic meanwhile literally posting the comments attached to usernames practically begging for people in his 200k + subscriber bases to bully the person who called him a shill, or responding on twitter in hyper snarky ways and pretend he’s always in the right.
Or post a 21 minute video where he replies to peoples user reviews of a synth where they have no way to reply in a way that would be noticed like he did here:
And I might add some of the problems he may have not experienced with the Medusa I, in fact, did. Specifically how the resonance just sort of blew out after a certain point and didn’t gently climb up (this was eventually fixed with a patch somehow, weird considering it’s analog). But he acts like his word is law despite others having different experiences and I’d go as far as the above video being an example of him bullying.
The main issue here is definitely with Polyend but he has chosen to be the Polyend Guy on YouTube so yeah, the criticisms of the company inevitably will be passed down to him as he is the person on YouTube telling everybody to go buy something and how great this company is for offering a upgrade program and what have you. He is speaking for Polyend in that video whether he is paid or not so it’s reasonable he would have to face criticisms as well.
Medusa was great… at least the analog engine by Dreadbox sounded great, but the OS and other digital implementation by Polyend where very poorly done, I remember very slow/lazy envelopes, various OS bugs and it really felt unfinished overall.
100% get it, however we have the option to mute his channel if we wish. I can fully understand the frustration users might have with him, yet I also can also understand Benn in the sense that from his pov he is simply doing what he enjoys and that is a very positive thing.
But yes, I do get your point.
Yeah I wish it had just stayed a Dreadbox project cuz they came through on their end. The laggy interface, poor quality midi controller that was awkwardly tacked on, and the kinda useless sequencer were the bad parts. Again, at its launch price it was better to just go with an A4 and I do think the A4 is the better synth even outside of the fact that it’s feature set extends beyond that of the Medusas (in other words, I don’t think it was simply better because it had more features, it’s core synth engine is better imo).
The core synth engine was impressive, but the digital part managed to make it feel like driving a ferrari with the steering of a schoolbus.
well said.
This is why everyone is mad, if Benn shilled for a company with no red flags no one would care. But when both of these entities have had a history of shadiness, then it becomes a problem.
This will probably get lost in the weeds but wanted to say this is indeed the reality. Alluded to this in the earlier comment but I had several “people” reach out to me today (because my profiles are being shared on some Benn Jordan fancircles I guess and I am devil incarnate or something for saying I think he is a shill).
For the record I don’t feel bullied. I probably have thicker skin than the guy who has a louder voice than me. I think people need to learn to relax. There was another comment in the original review video from a user here I will not mention that showcases how you can’t really say anything opposing the opinion of the content creator without group think bandwagon behavior jumping on you. If that’s a healthier environment for someone then OK.
I got both Play and Tracker. I love the tracker but I can’t use it because of the clicks/pops drives me completely nuts, takes me out of making music and into “how can I work around clicks”-mode. It makes me sad that they don’t seem able to sort it out for real. I was under the impression that they hade rewritten the sound engine but it seems that they just slabbed a bad declicker-algorithm on top?
And yeah, the whole Play debacle is a pretty bad look to say the least…
But one thing I have to say about people complaining about resell value dropping, get over yourself. it’s not a human right to retain a certain percentage of the resell value for anything. I presume no one’s forced at gun point to spend money on this hobby?
[Raises both hands above his head]
Oh, and also: Netflix and shill…
Youtube innit?
Get both!
why leaving out the more fitting one?
“a person who pretends to give an impartial endorsement of something in which they themselves have an interest.”
same dictionary
this is not a fact either, not what ‘we know’, but what you believe. what if he likes it because it’s free? what if he gets paid, how do you know?
‘bias’ and ‘conflict of interests’ are different concepts. full disclosures are there for a reason.
look above for another definition of ‘shill’, where’s it wrong?
the influencer market needs more criticism. in both senses: to be criticised, and to be critical — to themselves and to the products.
I try not to comment anything that I wouldn’t say to a person’s face. I’m definitely not perfect with it, but in recent years I think I’ve gotten quite good at following this rule! I think it’s a pretty good rule!
By tomorrow there will be several album releases of shill techno. By week’s end it will fragment into a number of microgenres: deep shill, dub shill, shillbient, shillstep. Hardcore shill will continue to be generally despised.
don’t forget Shillout
If we all did this, the internet (including this forum) would be a much friendlier place. I’ve been a bit bummed that over the last nine months or so the tone of this place has changed for the worse.
‘content creators’ is a borderline euphemism.
or rather, it’s a broad term, where ‘influencers’ is a subset
many of us here create content, for many different reasons and/or customers
with music equipment, the influencer position grew out of grassroots reviews by people who really strived to share (or show off! nothing wrong with that). it’s not by coincidence some (or many, rather) influencers want to portray themselves as your buddies, colleagues, professionals (musicians, producers in this case) while in fact their business is just this demonstration.
and it’s no wonder that videos got prettier, reviews more substantial, but somehow we lost both subjective position and spirit of honesty or desire to get to the core.
we’ve witnessed similar process earlier with magazines, the audiophile ones being the worst example. and who in their sane mind would really read even the SOS reviews today, really? influencers of today are magazines of old, for different public.
