Now I’m confused too. NPRN/Midi CC, or both?
I use the Environment in Logic to filter
You can do pretty much anything with it.
Yeah I have Logic X but I don’t wanna use computers in any way for music.
Anyways Hydra will be fine for most people it really is a fantastic sounding/looking synth
You don’t need to use the computer once you’ve routed everything. It can sit in the background with a wonderful screen saver running
Why turn down helpful options to over complicate things. I’ll never understand. A computer is as much of a tool as a synth.
I little laptop for filtering hidden under a desk werks just fine.
You could always do this…
You see this shit frustrates me, cuz you guys stress about set ups and certain werk flows, and don’t realize how lucky you are that you can make music.
I on the other hand, am open to go any way to get a result. But I SUCK at music. I WISH I could just make tunes. I’m so unconstrained by how things should be. But am completely constrained by how shit I am.
We all have our struggles, but keep persisting mate.
Have you seen this vid from tube digger? He uses a hack to teach the MPC live to use NRPN on the q-links. All he needed was a beat step pro.
Yeah i saw that. The thing to add is that you can send the specific NRPN for the MPC to use from the Hydrasynth. So that will hook up whatever specific knob or control you want to use. So you don’t even need to figure out the specific NRPN codes. I think that is what the Beatstep is used for so i don’t think you even need that.
I’ve not actually tried this method, i don’t have an MPC.
If i understand this correctly it is using the LSB (or is it the MSB) in the NRPN message.
Yea that’s even better. I think it sends the MSB.
Hey Peter118 – Did you just buy a Hydrasynth ?
Yes, I did
I read this thread and got a lot of usefull information from you and many others. I saw and listened to a lot of Youtube videos and decided to buy one. I was lucky that Rob planned to sell his Hydrasynth Desktop, so yesterday I bought it.
Very curious about the synth.
Well you’ll get to answer the question you asked earlier for yourself.
I think you’ll find the answer is both.
Enjoy the trip !
ADDED: ASM just released V 1.5 firmware for the HS, which now allows you to choose to use CC directly if you want, or NRPN. Question for @rob_lee — Are you going to rebuy ? (August 11th)
I’ve just got a Hydra for psytrance and while it can do those FM hi-tech leads it doesn’t have the fastest attack envelopes once you start making complex FM patches.
I also struggle getting good bread and butter psy type blips from it (bandpass up , pitch down stuff)
Also the latency timing of the synth from pressing a key varies with the complexity of the patch with high complexity patches being over 20ms latency. This is the rack version so running from MIDI via Cubase. It also feels sluggish to play some sounds even when the attack is set to zero.
Maybe an update will fix this. Maybe not.
Yeah, while I get stuff done with the hydra and get some awesome sounds out of it! I tend to go back to software more often then I wanted for some sounds. As I sample them most of the time, so latency is just a question of a quick cut, that’s not really Problem for me.
I hope it would be different, but I start saving money for a TI2…
Ti2 rules
I was struggling with this added latency by some mutators as well.
But the good news: i found a trick to solve this latency problem and get back those transients!
Use an envelope (luckily you have plenty of them) to modulate the wet/dry % of the mutant that is causing latency with a negative amount of -128.
Set the attack to 0, decay to about 20 ms and sustain and release to 0.
This way you will hear the dry sound for the first 20 ms and then the effect of the mutant will kick in seamlessly.
If you really want to perfect this, set the decay curve to fully exponential and you can even make the decay time increase with lower notes and decrease with higher notes by using up another mod slot with keyboard to decay time.
cheers. my way around it is to use some other synth. I’ll prob sell it once I can find something I want to take its place in my rack.
As big a fan of the Hydra as I am… for these genres, probably a Supernova. Maybe a Virus.
