OT Science Lab: Remix the Worst Band Ever

I liked the Science Lab concept from the Elektron-Users Forum and wanted to see it continue. Someone has already started one for the Machinedrum, so i’ll take a stab at one for the Octatrack.

The Worst Band Ever?

Over the last 50-some years, The Shaggs have made their way onto many “top worst bands” lists. Now some people may like their music and that’s alright. Being that the band has gained this title, let’s try to make something out of nothing, make lemonade out of lemons, polish a turd, etc.

For those that haven’t heard of them, have a read, or a listen:

The rules:

  • Create within the Octatrack
  • Use only samples from The Shaggs - My Pal Foot Foot
  • Samples should not be prepared outside of the Octatrack
  • No external instruments, effects, mixing, or mastering

For an arbitrary deadline, submit your remixes here by Monday, February 24th

An interesting side note for those interested in music history:

The sisters were not allowed to listen to music growing up on a farm with a controlling father. One day, their father, convinced by a palm reading that the girls would become the biggest girl band, forced the girls to practice in their basement everyday for 5 years. Keep in mind that they had no idea how to play their instruments. As a result, their style is completely self-taught and uninfluenced by other music.

It is a sad story, but it explains why their music is so different and by popular opinion “hauntingly bad”.

I’m about to go out of town, and will only be getting my OT back tomorrow morning, but I’ll keep an eye on this to see what everyone else comes up with.

That was so terrible, but my ears were already noting fun things to grab lol.

I quite like it, it’s a bit hypnotic and sometimes like a skipping CD.

I think this band is pretty cool, they have great taste for guitars, allthough I don’t really hear that much guitar in the song. :smiley:

Sounds like a myself drumming drunk with Jefferson Spaceship rehearsing in the background.

This will be fun.

Love this idea. Can’t make the 17th–I don’t think–but will try and come up with something.

Is 1 week too soon for a deadline? Feel free to take part in this and post your work after the 17th. The deadline is really just for us lazy types that tend to procrastinate.

Is the .wav file available somewhere, or should we just rip it from the youtube? I think I’ll give this a try (couldn’t get anywhere with 2-step :sleepy: ) An extra week would definitely help!

I’m looking forward to results…I need to get gear set up to record so I can participate…going to be tough with A4 arriving this week though :slight_smile:

Alright, I will change the deadline to February 24th since many of those interested are unable to make the 17th deadline.

How you get the sample into the Octatrack is up to you guys. For the best quality, check itunes. itunes Canada has it for $0.99. I would imagine it is also available from itunes in other countries.

The song is quite bad but somehow I actually enjoyed it, strange, so I ordered the CD.
