OP-XY/Z User Thread

i’m under the impression most of these things aren’t high-risk of fully bricking a device, most of them leave the bootloader intact and should you run into a catastrophic failure you could just reload the TE firmware.

that said, it’s one thing to mess around with a $60 Mvave device, and another entirely on a $2k OP-XY. So either it’s pretty low-risk or high-reward, or both.

Yeah, I to be honest I am on the fence with all the vibe firmware. Someone said that all the custom firmware will be abandonware anyway, as a) people do (most of the time) not know what they are actually doing or do not understand the code they create and hence are not able to maintain it and b) the threshold to prompt something “cool” is so low now; you just prompt your own firmware if a bug bothers you or you are missing a feature. I think in the end this tendency towards inidvidualization will only (and does already) create a lot of redundancy, which is everything else but sustainable and makes human effort seem without any worth. I am interested to see what happens, if this kind of stuff arrives in the broader public in terms of environmental, regulatory and societal impacts.

On reddit a lot of people are cheering now that TE’s “greedy business model” will be broken and that they could have been so much faster with FW updates. I am a bit sad, because, same with the Elektron stuff, this totally disregards the human effort that was put into this machines to make them magical for me to interact with as a user. Especially the XY with it’s immediacy feels super thought out from a UI perspective and is a masterpiece by itself.

This whole vibe trend currently pretty much feels like what my web designer friends where joking about when customers started to redesign their websites by themself. Just today I was witnessing a talk by a colleague using obviously AI-created slides. It just felt cheap.

Jesus, they‘ve just released a massive firmware update that fulfills so much of what many users always hoped would one day come to XY. It’s almost unanimously well received. And all we can talk about is fucking alt firmware?

This is a user thread about the official OP-XY as it is. If you can’t stop talking about that stuff, please discuss it in the OP-XY thread. I think it’s important that these user threads keep on being a resource for user based knowledge based on the actual product and not some random firmware hacks. I want this thread to be a repository for users sharing what they think about the latest update and what they do with it. So that when I eventually install it, I’ll have things to try out that I’m excited for. I don’t want to scroll through nonsense discussions about hacked firmware that will inevitably end in fights and confusion.

These people obviously haven’t understood a single thing about anything. I’m afraid this mentality will slowly take over Elektronauts as well.

In theory yes, but do you want to take the risk?. Even though I don’t own a XY yet, I be cringing if so. The risks are so high, and for what? some extra synths which you can get on a $50 Mwave CFW?.

it be better to just buy a CFW Mvave and use that as a source source for the XY

This was what bothered me as well. The devs took a lot of time but delivered really meaningful and well considered stuff that enhanced the device while keeping it unique and these modders are just putting in the same stuff a microfreak already has. Would feel frustrating to have spent that much effort on a new concept and seeing people just want your device to be the same as other ones.

Makes me sad to see colour on that screen if I’m honest. Im personally not touching anything that doesn’t have TE’s blessing

I am as anti-LLM as it’s possible to be, but if someone vibed up an OP-XY version that did nothing but make the fonts bigger, I’d start dating a chatbot asap

Some idiot is going to try and fit a whole daw on the small screen and look incredibly dumb squinting and menu diving with non-sensical button combos to operate it. They will get virtual high fives from the other losers who feel TE is “greedy” because they didn’t design the op-xy to their personal standards. And lastly they will not produce any quality music with it

There’s a real entitlement within the pro-custom FW crowd that reminds me of the pro-software piracy crowd. While I think some are just passionate tinkerers there’s a larger crowd of people who want free stuff, stochastically asking for new features, and who see playing with firmwares as a way to pretend they’re working on music without actually making any. On Reddit one of them called me a cuck for saying I didn’t want the TE sub to get overwhelmed by posts about custom FWs, another told me to leave the sub then. The OP1-Users sub is already 80-90% FW posts.
