I wouldn’t say it makes perfect sense. If you’re into finger drumming, putting the kick way over on the right like that is pretty much the last thing you’d want to do.
I get you…I just prefer using 2 hands for the kick/snare…Feels more natural - but whatever works for you
Yes. Even though I also like having a complete kit on one track as that makes it super quick and easy to live record finger drumming.
But I’m currently putting together a collection of cohesive presets for a band where I’m the rhythm guy. In this context, it’s much better to have everything on its own track to quickly swap patterns, mute individual tracks, and so on.
Now having the option to record individual tracks via USB fully sealed the deal with this approach.
On the XY I tend to use track 1 for drums in general, and track 2 for hats. I like to use LFOs on the hats for panning, or filter/envelope stuff, and also to make the hats track a different length (i.e not 16 steps) so it doesn’t get boring. The XY seems very well suited to this.
I might try grabbing some of my OP-XY kits to try it your way though.
There’s some additional benefits of having each drum sound (or similar drum sounds) on a dedicated track. The random punch in effect doesn’t go as crazy as with a full kit. And if you recorded a sequence, you can shift plus or minus to shift the whole sequence up or down by semitones. With drums, that means you can audition the same sequence played with different samples. With full kits this can lead to some happy accidents. With dedicated tracks the sequence stays in the same realm, so to speak, but still allows for some fun experimentation.
The brain can do similar cool things if you route the drum tracks to it instead of the melodic tracks.
This is a great idea. Usually the Brain is way too chaotic on a drum track.
I’ve been playing with the new USB audio options, and they’re even more interesting than I first thought.
I’m using the XY with the M8, connected to via USB-C cable. I have a pocket radio plugged into the XY’s aux input.
Now i can send the OP-XY’s aux in (the radio) to the M8 over usb, and at the same time, hear the M8’s output via usb. That is, you can route the aux in over usb, even while you have the XY’s input (aux track 5) set to usb, not aux.
I feel I have butchered that description. The point is, the XY is no longer limited to only one input at a time, so you can use it as a mixer of sorts.
