OP-XY/Z User Thread

Further speculating on the speculation: drum machine with 9 voices could mean 9 different drum engines (kick, snare, hat, etc) to choose from or 9 different drum sounds per track?

You’re going to need to be able to put different drums on keys in the same track, or it will break the XY’s (and the OP-Z’s) own convention.

I wonder if it would be something like Tonic. That might not be too hard to squeeze in, but I don’t know how it could be implemented.

If I like the OP-Z a lot, will I also like the OP-XY?

Not necessarily, it’s more fiddly and requires looking at the screen. But more capable obviously

The OP-Z’s knobs are WAY nicer.

Im loving this set up atm…OPXY is great for musical ideas with the HiChord…And slaved to M8 IOS which i prefer for drums, chopping stuff and general arranging

I agree, but it could also be that you can potentially choose (and p-lock) the drum engine on a knob and the keys are used for pitch?

I don‘t think so. You maybe could put the drum synth on every track snd choose a different drum engine on each. Then play chromatically

I wish I have more than 4 bars to play with. 8 bars of 16,or (4 bars of 32 steps)

This is my biggest hangup with most devices that have built in sequencers. Especially after exclusively using my MPC for most of this year. Yeah I can lower the resolution to squeeze 8 bars out of it and that’s mostly fine, but there are times when that simply doesn’t work.

If the drum synth is real I am really curious how they implement it. I think the best way is to have multiple drum sounds on one track, but that could just be me approaching this from a non-resampling standpoint taking up 4-6 tracks just for drum sounds would hurt.

The reason I keep going back to the Cirklon is because of the sane parts/song management.

I should never have sold mine!

Hard to give an exact answer, but I love my Z and I also love the XY

The way I work around this is to live record with the lower resolution (you can obviously lower the tempo too, if you have complicated/fiddly parts). Unlike Elektron where I believe notes “between” steps would be collapsed to the nearest step, the OP-XY plays back what you played in, allowing for very long patterns. You just need to make sure you can physically play it in though…

i want to use the sequencer, i don’t want to play and record anything.

I found a weird quirk I hadn’t noticed before. There’s multiple swing modes on the OP-XY (shuffle, danish, accent, etc). I thought I messed up a setting for velocity sensitivity somewhere, as I could play sounds with different volumes using the keys but when I hit record, velocity seemed to be ignored in the recorded pattern.
Turns out some swing modes (e.g. accent) seem to temporarily override recorded velocity values. The standard shuffle mode still respects recorded velocity values. Has anyone else noticed this?

Was there ever a fix for OPXY to not start on bar one every time? Bit annoying when im trying to fix some chords on bar 4…I just want it to start on bar 4 and not bar 1

Any ideas?

Yes. Some of my go to ones definitely apply their own groove to the velocity. I really like “island nod”!

You can also dial in how much groove is applied on a per track basis by holding the BAR button on the right. I like to leave the project’s groove overall at a low or nothing setting on the metronome page, but add groove on the BAR page to the rhythm parts only for instance.

Same with the song mode for me. Sometimes I want to resume play from a different point in the song, but I guess in this case I can just select the scene that I want to work on.

Oh. I guess you could rotate the pattern to start at the point you want by holding the track button and shifting all the steps with + and - . That’s kinda tedious.
