Mine was OK.
Glad I figured this out now, my first few sessions with the device were frustrating thinking I just wasn’t getting it. The tuning issues were enough to make things obviously not gel well, but weren’t glaring enough to make me immediately understand the issue.
Anyone know the best way to upload a tiny 10 sec clip here? Forum says file is too big, what’s the best site to use to upload?
B/c I’m having another issue I’d like to share that’s related to Timbre of a sound changing when the sequencer is playing an engine and I’m also playing manually on top of that
Pretty minor Bug:
When playing keyboard on an instrument track and switching between the two FX auxiliary tracks, sound cuts out, but once the track is switched, you can continue playing. It basically just cuts any held notes, and only when live playing the key bed
hi Buddy cant find the hi pass filter, or maybe i miss understood. Is it low pass filter AND a high pass filter, or you have to chose or one or the other. Thanx in advance
Is hi pass setting saved per sound or is it for project?
Sorry for blowing this thread up, but I’m taking all morning to dive deep to determine if I want to return or exchange, and I’m gonna be flat out honest:
I understand that the pitch bend issue is hit/miss for folks right now, but if there is a possibility of XY developing this issue over time (I suspect that’s a possibility, like OP-Z) then TE should make a master setting to disable the pitch bend input (effectively rendering an entire physical expression input and selling point of the device unusable)
Because if I were to get another unit, and over time (potentially past the warranty/return period) this issue surfaced again, it would be a massive deal breaker. This requires me to manually turn off pitch bend range on every single preset, every time
Of course I could go through and save every preset with it off, but that doesn’t override the factory presets, just creates more. And… this is way to ‘premium’ of a device to be doing something like that imo.
I am doing that now, and I am loving the XY
It’s so great in so many ways, with tuning issues behind me the brain is working and it’s SO fun, but man if that faulty pitch bend can effect the entire playability of the device, it needs the ability to manually turn it off globally, otherwise it’s just a constant headache and series of workarounds.
For all I know this could happen to any OP-XY at any point in the future
Hit shift + instrument button. Check 14.5 Preset Settings in the manual.
Why didn’t they catch this during testing? Such a dumb issue to always be paranoid about. My unit just shipped so I can’t cancel anymore.
mmkay… i’ve got my unit… and some midi to 3.5mm cables… which means I probably won’t be parting with my OT after all. heheh.
working thru the quick start guide, maybe i post something tonite.
i am really happy with the build quality, seems like much sturdier materials and key switches than op1 field. the latter is still a lovely instrument but op xy is just “more better” for lack of more precise terms
Just give me a setting to turn the pitch bend pad off and I’ll keep the XY lol crazy as it is, it’s not the defining feature for me. I would LOVE for the pad to work properly, as having an onboard expression input is really next level, but again, it’s not my defining feature.
It’s just, does TE have the guts to actually say “yeah this can be an issue, your unit can be affected by this issue, so here is the setting to disable it” When asking $2,300 for this?
I don’t think I’ve seen them acknowledge issues like this almost ever. Definitely not with any OG-Z issues, but afaik the pitch bend just stopped working on that, didn’t affect the global pitch of engines/samples.
Maybe they did acknowledge the EP-133 fader, but really just blamed it on retailers shipping it improperly.
I really can’t imagine TE acknowledging this.
But I really hope they do?
I, unfortunately, will return the XY.
Won’t be able to repurchase until I hear
- the issue is fixed
- there is a setting to disable the pitch pad
I also cannot recommend this to anyone now, it’s a significant hardware issue that is going to impact your entire experience. I was just running my sequence and playing through presets to find my next sound, and literally every preset is varying in tune based on its pitch bend setting = not pleasant
Please TE, I want to pay $ for your premium product, I want to continue to be a user. It’s a huge win but this is a significant issue that needs to be acknowledged and addressed.
Anyone else with pitch bend issues experiencing this / can you confirm this?
Hmm - my pitch bend wheel is mechanically OK, it works as I expect.
However, it is sending a TON of midi CC messages, continuously all the time, taking up a lot of bandwidth. Presumably that makes the timing of note data even more jittery than the MIDI norm. Is there a way to disable it? I’d like the option to disable it completely, and an option to disable it from sending midi CC.
(edit) - it’s basically the quiescent ‘noise floor’ of the high resolution midi pitch bend message. It is sent constantly when an instrument track is in focus. It sends on the active instrument’s midi channel. Sitting on the table, it flickers plus or minus a tiny number (i.e. a few percent of the max pitch bend value), but it wastes bandwidth sending this un-useful info.
(edit edit ) If you’re live recording a single, active track, e.g. playing the opxy keyboard, you’re stuck with hyperactive, microscopic pitch bend CCs in the stream, which isn’t much trouble to filter out.
If you wish to record multiple channels of midi from say, OP-XY playback into a DAW simultaneously, which is something I do a lot with OP-Z, then the WORKAROUND is to put focus on an aux track, e.g. aux track 8, while playing back a song.
Just received mine, no pitch bend issue and knobs all feel good. It’s super super fun. I’m already in love with this device. HOWEVER. There NEEDS to be a way to export audio in a sane way. I may end up returning it just because I can’t stand the export process as it stands (solo and record each track individually ???). Absurd. We’ll see over the next few days how I feel about it.
first opxy.mp3 - Google Drive Here’s the first thing I’ve made with it after a few minutes of messing with it. Brain is an amazing tool. Forgive the last bit of the song, I went a little crazy playing with the tape effect.
Anybody using their XY with the OP-1 F? It seems like a pretty good combo, with the sequencer and tape together, and sampling in either direction.
I did a quick test with OP-XY <–> OP-1f with USB-C, and had fun with recording XY on the 1f using analog audio and also USB audio. One track at a time, using mutes on the OP-XY. I didn’t quite get the midi clocks sorted on the 1F, but just set the same tempo on both. It’s definitely OK for a decent number of measures.
I can tell this is going to be a good workflow for playing guitar over top of an OP-XY loop. Mind you, one could do the same with almost any other tape recorder. It’s going to be nice for running the guitar through op1f effects, etc. though.
This is exactly what I was thinking, although I’m not going to buy an OP-1 just for that. I think perhaps the XY might pair really well with something like Loopy Pro on the iPad in this case, if it’s possible to send the XY’s jack input out via USB.
Can someone make a vídeo for the pitchbend issue?
I’ve a feeling the pitchbend thing is a calibration issue. Even above where @minphase was mentioning seeing all the pitchbend CC messages in the MIDI data, IMHO we shouldn’t see these if it’s not being used. The fact they’re seeing it in the stream says to me the calibration is off and the device thinks that the pitchbend is being ever so slightly pushed one way or another. Just not enough to hear it changing the pitch.
It’s also troubling that as per @midnightoperator94’s issue the pitchbend was impacting each preset as it was loaded causing them all to be out of tune. I agree a global option to disable this modulation key should be available, but on a device that’s over 2k, this workaround shouldn’t be needed. I was thinking of jumping in and picking one up on Monday, but this just turned me right off for now, maybe forever. I don’t want to keep worrying is this super expensive device going to break and some known issue going to kill any resale value (see OG-Z).
Has anyone tagged @te-david in this thread yet. Is TE acknowledging issues with the pitchbend on the OP-XY? How a company handles issues and communicates with it’s customers and potential future customers says a lot. I hope that this pitchbend thing doesn’t become a big problem and failure point on these devices.
Just one more thing, it seems that some users are having issues but then choosing to return the device to the retailer rather than bother with a whole warranty return, etc. I agree that if you’re having issues like with this pitchbend problem why should you have over 2k locked up while you’re device is returned and you wait for a new unit to be sent. TE should acknowledge an issue with the pitchbend and allow retailers to ship a replacement unit. Also if some users have issues and just do a return and not mention it’s a defective unit, another poor sod is going to then pay 2k for a b-stock already broken XY. Not fun.
I think that most issues (probably not @midnightoperator94’s though ) with the pitchbend can be addressed in firmware by adding a bit more deadzone ( aka debounce, aka hysteresis ) to the pitch bend sensor. I think I’ve seen similar fixes in TE release notes for other products in past, too.
