OP-XY/Z User Thread

Hey guys, I traded my XY for Push 3 Standalone.
How are the latest updates in regards to sampling and sample management?
Is it still buggy af?

use Shift + Bar instead of holding bar

I’ve owned my XY for 7 weeks and there’s been three firmware updates since I’ve owned it.

I’ve never experienced any bugs related to sampling or creating music whatsoever. The only bug I’ve ever run into is the fact that it wouldn’t show that it was charged past 80%, and that was fixed in the most recent firmware.

I can’t believe you sold yours. I’m not trying to brag here but to prove a point: I have a studio full of large iconic synths - and since acquisition, the OPXY is the most enjoyable thing I own. The depth of the unit is insane and the happy accidents keep coming every time I turn it on.

Bugs can be frustrating for sure so I don’t blame you as an early adopter. But every time I fire up Instagram there’s 30 new videos from people who are going crazy with this thing. They are gonna sell way more than the Field ever sold if they haven’t already.

For me it was very frustrating. I loved the device but the way it handled samples was obnoxious. And unforgettable at that price point.

I’ll wait for a bit until I raise my cash buffer again and I’ll probably get another one.

Who knows maybe that add proper slicing in the meantime.

Per an interview with the employee who wrote the manual, there’s solid speculation that they will also add new synth engines in future updates. The future is bright.

It’s been MUCH more stable for me recently, I’ve only had one lock up in the last few weeks while browsing samples. Sample management itself is still very lacking though, nothing has changed on that front at all. There’s no way to back up samples used in a project with the project, no way to rename samples without the computer (has it’s own bugs) and samples used in presets are still dumped in the root level of the sample folder.

It’s been quite a while since this thing was released. Now that the release hysteria has died down, what are users verdicts on this machine?

Like most TE devices, it’s capable of more than you would think when you have the patience to deal with the shortcomings. It doesn’t have every bell and whistle, but often it;s when you’re trying to think of a workaround that you come up with your most interesting ideas.

I originally got mine with a goal of using it a lot for live performances, but so far I’m struggling a bit with that more than I was expecting. Just a few gotchas that make it really difficult to use in the heat of the moment on a stage. For an idea creation machine or sketching out song ideas though, its unique in the places it takes me.

I still don’t get it why that’s the case with you. I have more than 1 GB of samples on the machine (mostly for multisamples) and none of them are at root level. They are all in their own folders.

Yeah and I would love just one more layer. Most of my sample folders are [pack name] > [kick] > WAVs. This doesn’t work in the op-xy.
It has only crashed on me once and I was back online in a heartbeat. Works quite well.

Only thing I would love is to have some sort of multitrack exporting feature. I gave up on wishing for basic sample slicing a while back

For me it’s been a revelation. I’ve sold half of my Elektron synths and my Prophet 6 and switched to pairing this with different synths on a song-by-song basis. I’ve been writing full songs rather than writing loops like I was doing on my Elektrons / Ableton (skill issue i’m sure but still). I love how immediate and accessible it is, how focused on songs and live performance it is.

I have a few issues with it - time stretching and slicing would be a godsend (imagine even 60% of the Octatrack’s capabilities here); I hate that you can’t chain projects together to make a continuous set; I wish I could control routing to the punch-in effects; etc. But overall it’s the most essential synth that I own and I’ve been making some of the best music of my life with it after a long creative dry spell.

AFAIK you can control routing to the Punch In FX, by pressing Shift + 2 (or 3?)

Thanks. Does it tend towards certain genres or is it quite open in that regard?

havent used my XY much in the past few weeks bc i sort of hit the limit on the synth engines. wanted to explore it more as a sampler but was having issues with earlier firmware.

any one running latest firmware using 8 multisampler tracks? what about 8 drum tracks? combinations?

previously i would get way too many dropped notes and weird crackly artifact sounds for it to be usable in such scenarios

eager to hear experiences

Agree. The MIDI sequencing capabilities for external gear is amazing. Being able to use any of the 16 tracks for MIDI is excellent too. I use it a lot on its own, but love pairing it with other gear too.

For example I’ve configured my Roland TR6S instrument MIDI notes to match the OP-XY standard, so F3 bass drum, G3 snare, Bb3 clap, Eb4 open hhat, etc. This means that I can program a drum beat on the go, but come back home later connect it to the TR6S via MIDI and then be able to easily switch this to play the external MIDI instrument.

Same with my TD-3 or Arturia Acid V, might get a good pattern going on the OP-XY and then switch the internal instrument out with an external one via MIDI (although half the fun of the TD-3 is it’s esoteric 303 sequencer). I’ve had loads of fun the the XY and the M8, Microfreak, Arturia V Collection, etc. It’s very quickly become the centre of my setup tbh.

Someone did some testing previously and there are limits to how many multisampler and sampler tracks you can have going. This is due to memory usage. Im not sure if this limit was raised in recent firmwares, but i think i saw some 48MB limit previously, but this was upped to 64MB or something. I know @MichaalHell might know a bit more as it was discussed previously in this thread too.

The only bug I come across anymore is that the XY won’t turn on if there’s an unpowered USB MIDI device connected when I flip the power switch. Is TE tracking this issue?

I don’t think you can (will check again when home).

The only way to control it is to change the routing to the Brain - but that only determines if a voice gets grouped as melodic (right side of the punch-in effects) or rhythmic (left side). You can’t exclude a track, for example a sampler track playing long samples / loops, from the punch-in effects entirely.

Oh. I was just referring to simply copying samples on the device. I don’t have expectations of renaming samples.

If you ask me. Digitakt has the best management in this regard. They assign unique identifiers to each sample. And no matter where you move it or rename it, the projects referring it still find it.

Open, especially since it’s a synth and sampler where you can make or load any kind of sound you want.
