OP-XY/Z User Thread

Agreed, as long as there at least some way for people to achieve similar results they don’t seem to add a lot of specific workflow features. One can hope, but I wouldn’t hold my breath either.

This sounds like an opening scene to a TV show I really want to see. Amazing!

It’s not so much that I need to chop: I’m happy to do that in Koala or Ableton and sample them back in. It’s fast and easy. It’s more that manipulating those samples is limited. That said, I bet I can screw around with them, just in new ways. Which could be a good thing.

I think it’s also that OP-XY offers new ways of doing things, new workflows need to be developed . Resampling a loop, with FX, Tape and punch-in sequenced or live and then chop that up etc. But having a chop engine would fast track the workflow immensely.

slim to none

don’t know what’ll be part of next updates but i heard chopping is already on the feature roadmap

Chopping and timestretching would be incredible.

I’m not holding my breath for timestretch since A. It’s not essential to my workflow, and B. The OP-1 / field doesn’t have it.
However, sample slicing IS essential to me. Since the OP-1 (and even the budget priced EP-133) can slice, it would be a shame if their new “flagship” workstation is incapable.

I’m back for more song mode ranting

On song page, they could have used the sequencer strip to let us sequence scenes. Press and hold a step, use one knob to dial the scene number, another for number of bars/repeats.

On the arranger page you could press and hold a step(/scene) and modify the patterns and mutes.

It could have been so intuitive and inline with the sequencing workflow. I just can’t get my head around how bad it is. What were they thinking.

  • In a more constructive spirit, I’ve found it useful to just load up the song arranger with scenes 1-32 from the get go, and just work through adjusting each scene as I play through the song. Saves building scenes one by one before hand and having to remember how to arrange later on.

Also I use an unused aux track (like CV in my case) and create blank clips that are 4/8/16 bars long to create different loop lengths for each scene.

Damn, this thing is amazing but not ready for serious use. I just wrote and saved the starts of two promising tracks, and then encountered a crash that totally wiped my machine (both tracks and all sample data). I can deal with crashes where I can restore from the last save point, but this is really disheartening.

Overall it’s sonically it’s a lot more interesting than their previous units. The page 3 filter master effect is really fun for tone shaping.

Dang that sucks… i think i only stumbled upon 1 crash that wiped my unit at the beginning of beta testing… haven’t happened since…

Please report it to TE so they can investigate. A crash that wipes the device is really serious!

WIP : I’m trying to tame the OP-XY despite all the bugs, the crashes that wipe out everything and the unpredictable presets and samples management… I sincerely hope that TE will come up with a stable firmware soon. :crossed_fingers:t4::pray:t4:

Thanks for investigating. Submitted a bug report too. Hope this can be fixed somehow.

I ended up putting mine back in the box a couple weeks ago for the same reason sadly, but…. Got antsy yesterday and wanted to play with it a bit, and after 10 minutes realized I wanted some of my kick drum samples in the song so started transferring 4 of them via Field Kit. Bam, crash and lock up, everything reset and lost my work too again.

Here’s hoping we get another update soon that sorts this out finally.

I haven’t updated my OS yet, but I tied uploading a bunch of samples yesterday and it does act weird when thousands of samples are uploaded to a folder. I’m having trouble deleting a bunch of samples I decided I don’t want anymore.

I had a few crashes, but haven’t lost everything yet. I’m just going to mess with the samples I did manage to load to the unit I guess. There’s a ton. I was having fun messing with a break yesterday. The sampler has such a nice punchy, open sound and I really like how the filters shape things.

I do feel a bit limited by the FX. I’m always using lo-fi for one of them so it feels like I only have one that I change to delay, reverb, or chorus.

follow-up for anyone experiencing similar issues: when I had my bad crashes, I was using custom multisampled instruments (i.e., with the max # of zones and pretty long samples) in the projects in question. Can’t say for sure that it’s related, but I’m going to try to explore the device using synth engines and more of the stock samples and see if that’s a smoother experience.

I tried to midi (Din) sync the XY as follower to the ERM multiclock B2B with the OP-Z. XY was slurring sync (trash) while the Z was locked without a hitch. I’m wondering if there is even a user side adjustment I can make to improve sync via din.

This is pretty much what I’m going to try next too. I was only uploading 4 single wav files less than 1MB total when my crash happened, and I couldn’t reproduce it when I tried again.

I’ve managed to get fairly good lo fi feeling just with filters master Eq and the master saturator, if that’s any help.

Would be great if the filter had a pre amp saturation setting for each instrument track though.

So as a sampler, the Move is good? My impression was that it’s just a sketch pad and not something you can really create unique sounds with, but it sounds like your experience has been different

You should try to hook up an external fx pedal. I use my Zoom MS70 CDR with the XY to give me another fx chain to play with too.
