Nice!

Normally you can play the tape and hear the FM, if only to record it: for this, you have to activate incoming audio (press COM) while in tape screen (at least on OP-1 OG)

I can’t see why you would t be able to broadcast on FM while in tape mode, it’s like the obvious use.

I think he means at the same time as the album is playing.

My bad :see_no_evil:. Correction, you can’t play the record and tape at the same time. Broadcasting FM while using the tape works.

Oh. I see.

The tape and the album can’t be played at the same time? So no resampling from album to tape?

You can resample to tape from an album. But not play an album and hear what’s on the tape at the same time, or the synth engines. If the tape is playing and I press play the album, the tape is muted, when I stop the album the audio from the tape is unmuted. It’s running silent in the background, if you had it running or press play during album playback.

The tape coloring is applied again when you resample from an album. Porta X2 sounds great.

Bonus, the tape on the reels is actually working and represents where you are on the tape

Thanks for the clarification, I’m glad that it’s still possible. Also, it’s a very nice detail that the reels represent the real position of where you are on the tape.

Awesome! I was wondering about stacking the effects of various tape mediums. And it always bothered me that the reels didn’t indicate position. So do they change speed, as they should? How at the start of the tape the right reel spins fast and the left slow, and at the end it’s the other way around.

As long as you resample you can stack different effect on top of each other, either resampling what’s on tape or from the album. And yes, the left and right reels spin at different speeds depending on where you are on the tape.

If anyone is curious about the sound of the different tapes, I made a short reel demonstrating the difference in sound quality… I got spurred to do this while I was doing slowed down tape stuff on the disc mini tape and noticed some really cool aliasing…

My 30 second first try of the OP1f

  • sound quality makes a huge difference in person, rather than the youtubes i’ve watched
  • unit appears very well assembled, no misalignments etc as some reports have mentioned
  • keys do feel different - not as clacky, but still ‘satisfying’ as we say these days
  • screen is not of the same type as the OG, but is instead a v high res colour screen that is nice to look at, just lacks the ‘glow’ of the OG*. Still see it as an upgrade with a lot more useful info on it than the OG cartoons.
  • an expensive item, but no immediate ‘oh gawd what have I done’ … instead looking forward to all I love about the OP-1 OG but much better.

*125% brightness colour boost in OS 1.1.4 released today has done a very nice job at making the screen much more luminous, so looks as good/better to me now than the OG.

The spec changes on paper really don’t do justice to their impact. Sampling screen looks great for example and a few tests are impressive in terms of useability.

The near 6GB memory available when I connect to my PC is very nice to see.

This is great. Thanks. Minidisc definitely sounds like a lower bitrate mp3 when slowed.

From the OP-1 Forum:

new os release just landed:

Do you think you’ll keep the OG one as well, or will you only keep the OP Field?

What’s “new disk mini seek”?

I would imagine maybe the rate it advances at has been adjusted or something?

Wish I could test it, but I didn’t order till the 15th so I guess it’s gonna be a bit :expressionless:

It’s when you use ← → in tape mode to FF/REW. It kind of jumps in small increments now.

I’ll never get rid of the OG, it’s the OG
But I doubt I’ll pick it up over Field for production. If I where to chose one today, Field all the way.

Recorded an improvised ambient piece testing Disk Mini. Really pleasant artifacts in the higher frequency spectrum.
