Octatrack mk2 with Micromonsta 2

Has anyone hooked their Micromonsta 2 up to their Octatrack? I’m curious as it doesn’t have a MIDI thru, but hoping it’s still possible. Thanks G

It is not possible. Get a splitter.

Could you expand on that a little please?

It is possible to use MM2 with OT, using OT midi out > din cable > adaptor > MM2 midi in.

If you want to connect other gear to OT midi out additionally, you need a midi splitter.

I think I see. The mm2 will be first in the chain, with a split midi output for the rest?

Is that what you’re hoping to do is have the MM2 first in the chain or what was your original intent when you asked the question? If it’s first, then I assume you do not want to use your OT MK2 to sequence it, correct?

A box like this:

No chain possible : as you said, no midi thru, nor midi out on MM2. (Eventually with midi USB, not sure and won’t check)

A midi splitter can send the same midi source (OT midi out in mind), to several midi outs (gear you want to control).

Ambiguous answers to ambiguous OG question.

That’s a MIDI expander isn’t it? I’ll need to duplicate the MIDI out from OT not MIDI thru x4 surely?

I have every intention of sequencing from the OT. If I have two MIDI outs from a splitter, surely that should work?

Well it’s a splitter. Midi in from the OT and then you can run midi to 5 other synths.

This is the one I use.

OK. That’s interesting. How did you connect it? Are you running other synths with differing MIDI channels at the same time?

I can link you to a video which shows a general setup for using autochannel with multiple devices. He shows a splitter cable which is fine for using clock sync only but I’d certainly consider a thru box as a better option for sending midi data.

You just have to apply the principles to an octatrack, it’s the same thing.

You can skip the part about the midi controller, but I’d recommend watching the whole thing as it sounds like you could use a refresher course on general midi setup. Not because it’s life changing but because it will help you with your next questions I’m sure.

Yes. Different midi channels. The midi boxes work great IMO

That was very useful thank you. Think I had a MIDI expander back in the 90s. I’d like to hear any recommendations. Has anyone succeeded running the MM2 in bi-timbral mode via the OT?
At present I’ve synced my DAW sends a clock to AR, and the OT slaved to AR.
From the OT, a daisy-chain or series connected MIDI devices.
Will using a THRU box limit break this continuity and be limited to the number of THRU outs?

Sure ! Bitrimbal mode, choose a channel n. Second channel is n+1.

To be clear : nothing to worry about between MM2 and OT.
Main caveats are Program Changes per part (relative to OT limitations).

You can use several tracks on the same channel with random arp, plock CCs…

I previously recorded 1 bar generative patterns using arps with MM1 sequenced by OT, MM1 + OT fx…no samples, monotimbral with CC plocks for sounds variations…

Pfff, that’s solved me a great midi mystery I couldn’t get my head around for some time. Thank a lot!

Is there a ‘better’ PSU? Why all the fuss about phone PSUs ?
I’ve got 9v 1a PSU with a USB socket on top, I can’t be certain of it’s origin,
The ratings matching the preferred manufacture’s criteria however.
On connecting all the droning/whining USB feedback noise was gone.
