Oberheim TEO-5

There is no such thing as too many synths.

Absolutely. The OB6 is probably the best synth investment I ever made. Killer sounds come leaping out of that thing faster than I can find a place to save them and I’m taking mine to the grave.

Oh man. I was set on getting a Take 5 now I finally have some funds. But sweeping through that variable state Obie SEM style filter is one of the best sounds in all synthdom to me.

I also have a fair bit nostalgia for Oberheims as the Matrix 1000 was my first poly.

All the talk about Oberheim sounds not being as versatile as Prophets is the one thing that puts me off but I too am not sure how true that really is…

Damn, just bought an OB6 desktop that is still in return period.

It’s absolutely stunning

But if I can get close to the sound with a keyboard and more modulation for less money……

Probably the main area where the Prophet has the edge is filter self-oscillation which the sem can’t do.

Will this be the same price as the Take 5?

Unfortunately, probably a little more expensive when it lands I’m guessing, although I hope to be wrong about that!

Anywhere near the price though will be a steal

Although you’re right, do people actually use self-oscillation in their music at all, or is it just a cool party trick?

Wonder how many more days we’ll have to wait until we have confirmation of this?

Yeah, it seems like there’s usually an ā€œOberheim taxā€ compared to the Sequential version of the same synth. OB-6 was more than P-6, etc…

But if the Teo is $1,700 instead of $1,500 for a Take 5, and resembles its OB siblings sonically, that still seems like a good deal. You get that state sweepable filter for a manageable price and a small footprint.

Yep, as long as the price difference isn’t too crazy I’m pretty interested!

It’s a bunch of SMT inside, like a Take 5, and probably the same amount of transport weight and warehouse space. Doesn’t seem like it should cost much more.

I think of the extra charge for OBs as helping to pay for Tom Oberheim having a comfortable retirement. No one ever got rich designing innovative synthesizers.

EDIT: ā€œSMTā€ not ā€œSSDā€ … oops, was just reading about hard drives …

Not averse to a small ā€œTom taxā€ if true. He and Dave Smith (R.I.P.) are deserving of the recognition.

The only time I use self-oscillation is with filter fm to get those Doctor Who type sounds, otherwise no.

Decide for yourself whether it’s a gimmick or not:

Sideshow Mel: Good shot, Barbara. I can’t believe it. A house with a bowling alley.
Marge: Do you bowl often?
Sideshow Mel: Actually, this is our first time. And I didn’t really care for it.

Simpsons aside, that is the first time I’ve actually seen the filter played and put to good use! Thanks

With key tracking it’s the perfect sine wave oscillator…if you don’t already have one!

I imagine it’s just to pay Tom his cut. Tom is going to get paid for every synth with his name on it, and Sequential isn’t going to lower their margins and make less money to pay Tom out of pocket.

Yep. I’m fine with it.
