Longtime user here starting from G1 in 2005 -> G2X 2014 -> G2 Engine 2020 until now. I do miss the tactile G2 interface as the engine is a ITB only experience. I tried VCV and similar software modulars for interest but nothing came close to the G2 in terms of UI, sound and such things as patch mutator (!), macros, etc.
But:
I do have a problem with the engine since a long time. It looses USB connection after a certain amout of time, totally random. I think it comes down to problematic hardware usb chipset issue, described in the ancient G1/G2 electro-music forum. Before it looses connection, i get audio crackles when changing parameters in the editor. A restart of the engine fixes it. As long the editor is opened with the actual patch, nothing is lost.
Hmph, sorry for the pseudo-solution, I had no memory of the āhardcodedā voice allocation.
What about using one patch per slot and filtering 3 notes out of 4 with an offset? Kind of expansive, but would be more deterministic.
No disconnection here, but IIRC, I stopped using reverb and delay modules as they would crackle each time a voice passes through them⦠only for one DSP though. It results in something kind of random. I guess itās related to some DSP memory being faulty, but I donāt know much about that.
I had the same problem when using my old Mac (mountain lion) for editing (software would just crash and say āmajor errorā). I eventually installed the software on a windows 7 laptop with the Nord v3 usb driver and havenāt had an issue. If youāre using a more recent version of windows, I believe Nord recently released a v4 driver that you could try.
What I meant was to load a path per slot, i.e. 4 patches, in each of which you would take into account one not over four.
Patch 1 would take in account the 1st one and the 5th one etc.
Patch 2 would let the 1st note go and take the second, hten 6 th etc.
And so on.
Should work as long as you donāt split the keyboard: all pressed keys should trigger the Status module (or any other appropriate one) and the output of the later would be filtered as described above.
Just thinking āout loudā, I have not tried this.
Yup, still use it. Still love it. I have a dedicated NUC mini PC attached to it that I remote into from my Mac and itās solid. Most recent patches are driving (and effecting) a Pulsar-23 and a Nord Drum 3p.
Iām interested as well.
I have also a dedicated mini PC for the G2, and managed to use Microsoft Remote Desktop to access it from my Mac, it works, but the UI is less responsive, click+drag is super weird, and keyboard shortcuts donāt work. So I ended not using the remote app, but instead plug my 2nd screen + keyboard + mouse to the mini PC, which is a bit of a hassle.
Yeah, Iām just using MS Remote Desktop. The knob behavior can be a little weird. I run the Pc at a low resolution on a large monitor which helps some. If anyone has experience with an alternative remote software Iād love to hear from you.
Probably not helpful for your specific case, but for anyone else whoās curious, I use the built-in MacOS remote software between two Macs.
Iām using it with a 2011 Mac Mini (upgraded with an SSD drive) over Wifi.
There are some of normal hiccups youād expect from a machine that old, but primarily thatās when booting up. Once itās going, itās been very stable, no dropped connections from the remote software or the G2.
There might be some slight knob lag but Iām guessing more than anything that Iāve actually noticed of thatās impeded how I use it.
I do also use a third party software to bump up the screen resolution a little bit larger since Iām using it headless, and thatās help quite a bit too.
I still am enjoying mine. Itās perfect for my desk. Because it has a built in power supply, so I can swap it out with my Analog Keys quickly. Because of this Iāve been really obsessed with the AK, but every time I plug the G2 in I am blown away and I end up loosing track of time. The last time I was looking through the patches to find the best Nord Lead recreation, with the most controls already set, then add the delay and reverb and I have a beautiful interface to tool around on. Itās a great timeless keyboard. I shall never let this one goš
My G2 had a lot of buttons with problems (needs more clicking, or to fast or to slow etc.) that it became irritating and a reasing to avoid my G2. So i took some time to open it, dissamble the UI board from the case. Open every button, removed all the small metal contacts, and cleaned them. First cleaning general with some pressed air. And then putting small amounts of Kontakt 600 (had it lying around) in every button and on every metal contact. Letting it dry and again some pressed air in every button. Assembled everything back. And YES! All the buttons work realy as new again. I took some inspiration and advice from here: Phase57 - Nord Modular G1 synthesizer button repair
Thatās a common problem on those buttons Clavia uses. It happens on another of their instruments I have here. Without even opening them, just press and move a bit the button helps a bit. But Iām definitely taking the advice for longer term solution, thanks for sharing!
A long time ago, I remember trying out a used NL3 at the sellerās place and telling him āListen, Iām sorry but Iām playing live and cannot afford this kind of behaviour on stageā¦ā
Iām having a problem with my G2 keys, where itās not sending midi out. Like, when I play the keyboard, it doesnāt send midi notes on channel 1,2,3, or 4. I have it set to send midi in the midi preferences and on those channels. I tried all the settings and preferences in the editor, but nothing in Ableton or any of my gear. Does anyone have a clue? The manual seems to say it should just send midi from the keyboard without setting anything up. It was working at some point. Anyone? Thanks in advance
