Norand Mono (Analog Bass Synth with Sequencer)

the update instructions have some very specific steps that have tripped up many folks, maybe try again or see what support says

Did you use an SD card btw? Looks like that could be a problem if not formated

Instructions are straightforward… Put new FW on the included SD card and hold PTRN & RUN on startup… Calibration started automatically after firmware update, I guess it is part of the last firmware? Update went smooth.
If I check firmware, it says 1.3, but the download page says 1.2.1r… Page LED: 1, SEQ LED: 3… Very strange… But it is definitely updated, it showed 1.1 (not entirely sure, but definitely not 1.3) before.

Synth was not really hot when calibrating, but I assume oscillator calibration and system stability are not linked?
Another thing I just thought of: I used my smartphone USB-C charger in order to keep the inside of the box as original as possible. I might try again with the included charger. Any reports on a link between stability and using non-proprietary USB chargers?

Anyway: I’ll leave it on with the included USB cable and recalibrate. I’ll report back!

Power

Mono MK2 can be powered either via its dedicated power port, or via the USB device port. Note that it require at least 1A capable ports with broadcast capabilities. MK2 senses the power capabilities of the power source, there are 3 level of power.

  • Normal mode : With the included power supply, or a high power capable USB-C host, Mono boots in high power mode, the LEDs are full brightness.
  • Low power mode : With a 1A capable host, such as a USB 2.0 host, mono will be in low power mode, with the LED in low brightness.
  • Standby mode : Mono cannot work correctly with a 0.5A supply, if it sense such a power supply, it will not boot, or go to standby mode.

Sorry to hear that, it is really a shame. The Mono looks stellar in theory, but not really usable (yet) beacause of its bugs.
I think I’ve read in the Norand forum that some folks had luck wipening the SD card before installing the latest firmware. Not sure if this will help you though.

I know this doesn’t help anyone, but I’ve never had a crash on my mk1 (I’m running v1.x firmware).

Here is the thread I was referring to about formatting the card as a potential fix

Can anybody comment on this. I invested not only money but time into mk2, using it daily dealing with bugs …(especially if you use expressions modulations on MK2) so why 50% off can anybody chip in ?

  1. New MK3 coming
  2. Norand as company has issues to keep it running
  3. Another New Product coming ? (like polyend keep popping products not fixing bugs on older ones.)
  4. Other

Only getting sound from the right side of the stereo output using headphones. I also tested with a stereo splitter to 6,3mm cables….
Could I be doing something wrong? Is there a pan setting?

As far as I can tell, no. (I have mk1 and am on 1.99, so not your configuration.) This sounds like a hardware issue. But since the sound is mono anyway, you can work around this, though it is more awkward.

Thanks for the response! Yes I’m starting to think that as well. Guess it’s going back then, need to decide if it’s worth to give it another chance…

Another weird thing. If I select factory pattern B3, it repeats a note and gets stuck ;D

On thing that helped me when i got it was to erase all patches it came with… i think i had exact same issue with Patch B3

Factory patches was not my cup of Tea anyway

Okey, strange! Good to know, yeah same here just wanted to listen and tweak some sounds without having to learn the sequencer but will give it a shot

Its a fun synth to just tweak and explore. Didnt miss the patches at all

The factory patches are nothing special, way below the average for factory content. The main issue is that mk2 and 2.x firmware seems endlessly buggy, and it feels like the devs are losing interest. It’s really too bad, because mk1 and 1.x is pretty special. I paid a little less for mine used than you did for a new one, and I considered that a stone bargain.

Not fun to hear that people have bad experience with the synth. I love it and yes it dont get enough love from the developer. I love it for what it is but it could get som polishing

It could, but everything they have done to it since about firmware 1.2.3 has made things worse. They have squandered a considerable advantage.

Decided to just send midi notes from a Digitone bring the audio back for a good deal of reverb and delay. Gotta say, it can sound so crystal clear, so dirty and so fat, and morph in between in an interesting way.

Is it just me or does it sound very very good?

I don’t really have energy for a lot of bugs though, but thinking it might be worth a shot considering the sound. Wonder If they’ll manage to make it more stable going forward.

It sounds very good, but I think you’d miss something by overlooking the sequencer. It’s quite good as well.
