Norand Mono (Analog Bass Synth with Sequencer)

ah, in the norand group. i dont have facebook. i dont understand why they have a forum, if they dont use it at all

yeah, I don’t know, they were pretty quiet for a long time, and a couple of months ago they started posting tutorial videos

you never know, it’s a 2 people company (AFAIK), things happen, health issues, what not, and they can be unable to communicate
(just assumptions, here)

wouldn’t you post your new firmware on your webpage? even if you are just one person?

ok, sounds good. ill feed my mk1 with that

V2.2.0r

Bug fixes :

Two main things have be reworked, which result to a way more stable unit :

    • The live recording have been reworked, and uses way less RAM and processing power, making the unit way more capable
    • Before this update, when the unit was used heavily, it would cause some weird behavior (like instant raising of the output level and many more), this has also been fixed

Not interested (V2.x takes away the sequencer-only undo/redo stack which I find so appealing for improvisation) but I really hope this fixes things for those of you who dare. That changelog does not impress me.

Well if they eventually managed to make their FW stable and regain user trust, I would be impressed, because they would come a long way…

Whenever a new firmware pops up, I’m reminded how much I was intrigued by the concept of the Mono MKI. I really wanted to try it one day. But seeing the mostly non-existent communication of the developer to the outside and the unpredictability of targets/goals made me hesitate more and more.
Also: MKIs not so easy to find for reasonable prices that would justify the gamble these days apparently.

It’s a great synth, you should try it. It’s quite unique, I would say.

As long as you use a sub-2 FW (e.g. 1.99) you shouldn’t experience too many quirks. The latest FW introduced a couple of interesting features but the previous one is already packed with fun stuff at every level (sound design, randomization, performance, sequencing, etc.).

If the Mono had been released, updated to 1.99, and then the company folded, so no Morphos, no mk2, no 2.x firmware… then mk1 would be on its way to legendary status. It really is quite nice.

Yes, they really screwed up big time.

I was a massive fan and used it all the time, and then they announced this FW overhaul, with many cool features, and then I waited, waited, and waited again for the new features. Then MKII came +/- at the same time as the long expected FW update, like one and a half year later, but by that time I had moved on.

It’s one of the few non Eurorack pieces of gear I’ve held onto in my purge. The mk1 and mk2. Flaws aside, it’s absolutely brilliant and unique.

I used mine mainly as a linear drum machine (using mod notes), and it was perfect in this role, but I wonder if they will release a drum machine one day.

The thing with this company is they are full of innovative ideas (albeit poorly implemented sometimes), so I’d be happy to see what they would come up with in the drum machine department.

Does this mean that if you randomize the page you can’t undo it? I just Got my mk1 out of the drawer where it’s been hiding since they announced firmware mk2. Think it is on 1.23 - it’s been a blast and it even syncs sorta ok using a cme WIDI master on the din ports. Really like the sound of it. Don’t know yet if I dare update to 2.2 or even 1.99.

No, you can. The problem for me with 2.x is that the undo stack applies to everything, like filter or oscillator tweaks. In 1.x, it just applies to the sequencer, which is great, as one can build up a nice sounding phrase by randomization (undoing the additions that don’t sound good right away) and then take the later additions away in reverse order, put them back, and so on, all the while tweaking the sound. Much fun.

Thx. Should I upgrade to 1.99? Does it sync better? It is actually a bit ā€œdrunkā€ on 1.23. Just made a nice kick and a ok hat - maybe I’ll just sample them to get it tighter. And it is keeping me from getting a 101

I don’t remember noticing a lot of difference from 1.2.3 to 1.99, but I didn’t really stress the device. I had no sync issues in either direction. My guess is that there are a few bug fixes, so give it a try. I have the .syx for 1.2.3 if you decide to downgrade again.

Thank you! I’ll give 1.99 a try - then mk2 can wait a bit. Has anyone tried 2.2?

Just read this on Norand Facebook

Haven’t been able to use my mk.1 since 2.1.2. Mailed support, never heard anything back. Just installed 2.2.0 and same, unusable

Another user also confirmed this

I was in the process of buying another one because of the new firmware but dont think i will bother

How can I actually find out what version is installed on a Norand Mono?
Mine is a mk1, and stable and I won’t do an update, I’m just curious.

I asked earlier in the thread got this reply

I don’t know if there’s an official way but you could check a 2.0 feature to see if it works. Looking one up…

EDIT: I think ā€˜Visualization Mode’ is a 1.0 feature only. Pushing and holding ā€˜FUNC’ shows your parameter offsets/locks. Triple clicking ā€˜FUNC’ locks ā€˜Visualization Mode’.

In 2.0, parameter offsets are shown via LED intensity. I don’t think there’s a triple click ā€˜FUNC’ mode anymore.
