I think this challenge isn’t meant to be about virtuosity, but is about self-discipline, focus, and shared accountability. Good to practice regardless of class or wealth. There’s plenty of gear to purchase at any price point, you could even spend a day downloading free VSTs rather than making music with what you have. It’s also too easy to buy gear you can’t really afford.
Annnnddd, I’m out. Ordered something that was too good a deal to pass up, though it won’t get to me until 2026.
After having not bought anything for 18 months, I’m still going to call NGNY '25 a success. All the best to you, and I will be around to cheer you on, and encourage myself to not spend too much.
I also want to give credit to Elektron for even allowing us to have these kinds of threads/discussions when they are obviously a profit driven company that relies on sales to operate.
Makes me want to buy a…joking ![]()
Regardless of your reason, I totally support NYNG2026. I’ve never done anything this austere…should be fun to wreslemania with my consumer impulses.
this was why I started NGNY 2025
I only had 3 pieces of hardware but was in a flux of bits in and out for about a year. Probably doesn’t sound so extreme written down, but it was taking up far too much mental space for my liking.
So it wasn’t about too much gear, or money, it was all about headspace really.
Having some time out I’ve really learnt that there is no perfect set up. My mantra going forward is going to be to have a select few things, that I can keep on my shelves, and pop out whenever I feel like it. Not trying to arrange them perfectly or chop and change them too frequently.
I think this is exactly what I‘ve landed on as well, now I just want to freeze the option of select things to swap in and out and no longer add anything or swap things with other things that basically do the same. You know, just enjoy the things I‘ve been able to acquire and have fun with them instead of planning the perfect setup in my head all the time.
Well I did produce new music this year and bought a lot of gear. Next year, hope to buy nothing except maybe instrument cables. Only temptation is when Polivoks 8 drops.
even this sentence is a mouthful, very reflective of the process!
totally agree with you.
quite looking forward to see if my actions line up with my learnings next year.
I aim to downsize this upcoming year. No new gear besides a synth that I’ve pre-ordered. I hope to better this year than previous attempts. I sold off all of my eurorack in 2025, so that should definitely make this easier ![]()
I understand I don’t see it as allowing I just had it in my head and want to get it out of my head
how come you sold it all off?
I’m in! This is gonna be the year, I just know it ![]()
I ended up spending more time planning, buying, reordering and reading manuals than making music.
Selling doesn’t sound like a solution then. You’ll end up reordering again ![]()
Reordering modules should be pretty easy if you have 0 modules ![]()
These NGNY tend to be pretty hardcore. Whichever one I joined I failed but can’t say I liked the experience because some have their own very good reasons for making it a no name place.
But, I have been tempted to make a separate “will do better” thread vs a straight up users and abusers thread, focused on doing but not buying
The point being that we all need safe spaces to meet our goals, and there’s room to create them if this isn’t it.
I’d like to commit but it boils down to if something happens between now and NYE. It’s 50/50 at the moment.
I know one thing for sure, now I’ve got a job in the New Year (been in consultation since mid Nov) I’ll be spending money on tutorials for my current gear whatever happens.
Yes i think the Y25 thread also started a little zealous but cooled down as the months went by, let’s not focus on policing everything here and support people to do their best ![]()
Less Gear New Year – LGNY ![]()
The Downsizing Your Hardware thread really helped me when I didn’t want to commit to buying no gear, but still wanted to improve my relationship to and habits around it.
In 2026 I’ll be doing both, I still have too much gear and not enough time & headspace to properly use it all.
