#NGNY22 - Happy NoGear New Year!

@Joebas you can put me off the list. Not that i have sinned in GAS, but the conservatory where i did a masterclass offered me a job and i took it. I am a freelance teacher now and need some things for that. I can get it with a nice discount and the school takes into account that i need some stuff… but i am gonna buy things (a push 2 is in its way) for sure.

Still i am going to follow This thread because Its a great read mentally. Thanks!

Congratulations on the new job! If that is stuff you need, to do your job, I would deem that 100% ok…?

Having now gotten a good look at the ST, I think I’ll be confidently able to stay strong! Looks absolutely lovely, but without polyphony I’d essentially be trading up my M:C for the new machines, a better UI, a better retrig situation, and the analog components for $1k minus whatever I could get for it… which is a hard one to justify as a mindful choice rather than a want.

Being able to make calculations like that is exactly why I wanted to join this thread tbh! My setup is relatively lean, but it does everything I need it to do with some coaxing and external effects.

Minilogue XD: chords/pads/analog arps
Digitakt: samples/base waveform melodies/midi control
Model:Cycles: drum synthesis/bass/monophonic melodies
Subharmonicon: chaos/modular soundscapes with daw fx/monophonic analog

Back to experimenting with composition with these lovely friends of mine after a short bout of mild GAS. The next challenge will be when I visit a friend with a Microcosm this summer…

Yeah i need some other things as well… maybe i can get it on Loan from the school but i dont want to wait for that really. I hope to stay strong in the ‘other’ GAS situation. The school has some really nice stuff

It sounds to me that you definitely haven’t failed but instead made some good decisions by selling useless stuff and by focusing on what is essential.

I too kinda feel like I’ve failed this challenge and have felt a bit shy about writing anything in this thread bcs of that but there are levels to this.

I mean it’s not the orthodoxy that will bring happiness and musical fulfillment to ones life (for me anyways) but the change in ones attitude and aim of energy and time.

Obviously lots of ppl have been sucked into the consumerist nightmare and are now kinda waking up from that, thanks to this thread. I definitely can say that my buying habits we’re totally out of control and I got nothing done and felt like an idiot for a good reason.

The input of you all has been very eye-opening and has made a big impact on me. Thank you all for that and let’s not forget that to fail is not only about the mistakes been made but to not even trying to remedy a terrible situation as hard as it can be.

Thinking in the same lines. I already have a Digitone and Machinedrum and was pretty much set on getting an A4 mk1 next but if the Syntakt is (close to being) A4/AR + DN in one box, or indeed more than the sum of its parts, then it’s gonna be a no-brainer for me at some point. I reckon the second hand prices locally will be just perfect by the beginning of 2023.

Right now I haven’t watched any Syntakt videos yet but I never buy synths new anyway so I’m perfectly safe. Will be very interesting to see and hear if it sounds like the sort of ”best of compilation” Elektron synth I envision it to be. (Edit: After the first couple of videos I’m not salivating over this yet. Having said that, e.g. the chord machine seems very nice.)

But yeah, still going strong with the NGNY. Although I have to say that even though we’re safe here in Finland, the war in Ukraine has made it pretty much impossible for me to even consider buying gear. Just hits so close to home in so many ways, and has made me appreciate what I already have so much more - and I’m definitely not just talking about gear.

This should not be a thing. I, and I’m sure everybody else, enjoy your contribution, and don’t get this the wrong way, but I don’t care if people here sinned, other than because I wish them the best for themselves. So post away, friend. Every viewpoints on the subject is valid, sin or no sin.

Thank you! I appreciate that.

I felt the same… I didn’t want to drag others from their path… but regardless I feel like this thread has been a huge help

My philosophy on that matter is, that if someone else can drag me from the path, it was not my path yet.

I approve of this way out.
If I happened upon an affordable Biscuit, I’d be off the list

Midi Fighter Twister was the last purchase I made.
Still haven’t got deep with it for the purpose I got it, but I certainly will at some point

syntakt looks cool, but i don’t see it doing anything i can’t do now with my current gear. no GAS. i considered getting a couple of technics sl-1200s, though. they’re more for listening to music than making, so maybe they’re not gear. we shall see.

Yeah, not feeling a thing about that Syntakt - not going anywhere :slightly_smiling_face:

same…I was worried I may fall off or had a struggle ahead of me to stay on…but Syntakt just isn’t hittin’ with me.

The Syntakt is underwhelming to me too. If I didn’t have a DT, DN, and OT I might have more interest.

Next year I might trade in a DT for a used ST, but if the UI changes trickle down to the DT/DN it might be unnecessary.

syntakt looks really cool to be honest, but i don’t have the need for it yet so no GAS. i think if i start playing out a lot more it will become more appealing to me because its so versatile, quick, and compact. i think it helps that the features are familiar so its not as tempting to us especially as we examine our purchasing habits.

stay strong, friends

Yeah I feel like having an M:C and a Digitakt has me pretty well covered for what the digital side of ST does, I actually often just sample sounds with extra hands on tweaking happening into the DT and then I have the filter envelopes and lfos to play with it as a sample… I know not really the same but it does cover a lot of ground. Can’t deny the syntakt looks fun, but so does all the gear on my table.

I sold everything (5k worth of stuff) expect my MD and 0coast. As someone who totally adored the DT but couldn’t gel with the use of samples ( I kinda used it like ableton drumrack) I’ll be getting a Syntakt at one point.

It is everything I hoped elektron would bring out next, and now its here!

However, I sold my stuff to see what its like not being identified with making music. I wanted to know if I’d miss it. And here and there I do! I can see now that I took my hobby way too serious as I was also doing it semi professionally. It was wearing me down and holding me back. Financially but also mentally, even physically it took up so much space!

I must say that I do have the ich to twist some knobs now and again and I see that as a healthy sign. I’ll probably get back into music and some point and would need to rebuy some basic things such as monitors and audio interface. Which is fine. But I probably wouldn’t go “best of the best” like I used to. This is gas speaking but I can see myself rocking a laptop with ableton a set of small speakers and a Syntakt and be completely happy.

In my case more gear = less creativity, I learned that the hard way.
