btw. in my book it is not about cancelling, it`s about feeding thoughts and let everybody decides what term to use. This is what the op wanted i guess…
Used in the context we are talking about it is not “clearly abusive”.
“Raising awareness”? No, implying that black people are fragile victims who need protecting from words is racist.
Edit: Although I don’t believe it is your intention to be racist.
i don`t think so. I can only guess that Grace Jones had much fun creating this song and maybe had to defend it to some critics from the poc community. Which is ok. Would be nice to know if she would titled it the same in the meantime. And if not, what she has to say about it now…
According to some wikipedia etymology, the term slave comes from the middle ages when oftentimes Slavs were forced to work.
I’m sure there’s some way to spin a joke about midi slavs? Or how about a witty comeback to cancelling all slavs?
Alright, I’m heading out, rarely has any thread like this ever cooled down instead of continued heating up for no reason.
How about USA and UK? In that order.
I will offer an answer:
Ultra-Wokeness and fine-point political correctness are a playground of a relatively small group of very privileged and highly educated people. By constantly tweaking speech and labelling people who do not go along as racist/bigotted/problematic/regressive/“certain types of 'men” etc. it socially excludes people who are none of the above, but simply use a different vernacular and were not indoctrinated in Wokeness. Lots of people don’t know what a dead-name is, or what a micro-aggression is but that really does not make them racist. However, they feel excluded from the woke circles and therefor drift socially and politically to where they are accepted.
Elaktronauts is an extremely liberal, open, egalitarian and yet every time a novel Woke-Language idea is suggested those who do not agree get personally labeled.
Raising awareness is nice, but lets be real about who is raising it, in what forum and who it serves. Slavery, exploitation, abuse are not changed. All that happens is that one privileged rich-kid feels morally superior some of his/her peers for being incrementally more woke.
Also ask a few black people what they think?
I was about to suggest we all shut up until someone who has a family history of slavery speaks up.
I agree with some changes in language that are clearly out-dated and/or plainly offensive, but sometimes too much adjustment can be a bad thing too.
It could be said removal of words that have an entirely different meaning in their context is an effort to save the reader from exposing their awareness to the wrongs of the past.
I could be offended at the name Paddy as it was formerly a racial slur. However I don’t ask my friends with that name to change it so as I don’t have to be reminded of bad parts of history. Nor do Paddy fields offend me.
Everybody does if you go back far enough. I doubt that you will find any recent slavery on Elektronauts
i wasn’t trying to “cancel” anything. i was not trying to be “woke”. it was simply a thought in my head should be more focused on evolution, everything should have the goal to evolve into something better.
anything that has happened in the history of pop culture, sports, music - whatever is already done.
i was only thinking of how we can collectively make everything better for everyone moving forward
…and black people are not the only people to have been enslaved
OK, I’m in the UK. My family history doesn’t have any lords so they were probably serfs.
I’m not offended.
i prefer this one, it sounds more like a technical term, or let’s say it’s more a functional term
anyway, i don’t know if we are in a time of cancel-culture … for me the whole fuzz is about some sort of language hygiene - reducing an unpleasant emotional effect of words from daily living for various human beings
if this become a standard - mistrust and hidden societies could be created (angry rooms sit-ins) - i don’t know
but i guess this is a generations topic … maybe the next one will overturn their parents attitude
the 1968 against the WW2/1950-gen., my generation - the late 1970/ early to late 1980 against the 1968 and so on and on and on and on and on . . . . . . …
this is quite a good explanation of the danger excluding people by drawing micro- lines of labeling things in good/bad. this never worked and is not my point here. I `m talking about awareness like telling my oldest son (7) about slavery and using slave while telling him how my ballpark of synths and stuff communicating with each other. When he asks about how things like slavery and midi gear talking to each other (in a contructive way, both sides make some funky shit…)fits together i could tell him about context, humor, and such stuff…but his question alone is finally the point in this discussion i think…maybe you too
Still waiting … (not seen any relevant post yet).
Yup. Commonly used in mechanical engineering as well.
My uncle once did my paper round when I was sick.
Never got a penny off me.
Nope that’s off the table too since I just chose to be offended.
You don’t need to be a woman to find misogyny offensive, really some of the arguments here are hard to fathom, if it’s not harming anyone to evolve the language then the sooner the better such terms are saved for the potency within the historical context - who gives a f### if we adapt to a new term, it takes no effort - the word conjures up unnecessary distraction or more significantly dilutes the original meaning - just because something has assumed new meanings in colloquial language doesn’t make it alright - a lot of accepted terminology has been droped in recent decades and it’s for the better - i don’t understand how people can be so motivated to contest this sentiment - it’s progressive - flagging up Grace Jones is a red-herring, it’s super clear from the context what the master is, she can arguably own that term more than some of us and i suspect that it might be a choice of word that wouldn’t happen now
too many flags here - way too many - this thread needs cooling fast
Because that is the equivalent to owning another human being as if they were your property.
Okay.
C’mon people. Elevate the conversation.
