New Terminology for Midi

We really should consider changing that terminology we use here in the music producing world regarding MIDI and the whole “Master/Slave” relationship.

Can we come up with something that feels better please?
Irks me every time!

any thoughts on how we could accomplish this?

What should we do about the term ‘mastering’ a recording ?

EDIT: I withdraw the question

The term master on its own you don’t have to worry about. It’s associated with mastery, master classes, master copies, master bedrooms, the antiquated practice of calling young men “masters,” Masters’ degrees, uh… MasterCard. Not one of those terms originated in the practice of slavery. (I checked.) If you master the bassoon, you did not enslave your bassoon. So people will still get this meaning.

I think it’s the slave part of the equation that bothers people. The title/verb “master” does not need to be eradicated. Mastering a craft or mastering a track harms no one.

Thinking about modern day slaves and wondering if they’d preferred to be called a follower, citizen, secondary, etc.

This thread reminds me of the time a former work colleague took offence at me for using the phrase “nitty gritty”.

I’m never going to win against the cancel culture world we’re in though so a shrug of the shoulders from me and moving on…

It’s a technology term used throughout multiple electronic devices which communicate with each other.

It’s not going to change because you take offense to it.

I already thought about that (git repos) … but for some people, master on its own is not seen to matter.

The nouns used in MIDI 1.0 are “transmitter” and “receiver” and are perfectly adequate.

Hah, I tend to have this vague sexual image in my head with the combination of the terms master/slave, rather than… workhorse slaves.
