New academic paper on gear fetishism

OK, I misunderstood, not creepy at all.

Question. Why are there hardly any women musicians on Elektronauts? This thread is very imbalanced and needs some female input. It should be really closed as were only digging a hole deeper and deeper.

There’s a few women about, but maybe they’re more interested in other things than being dragged into a token woman role on bullshit threads like this.

I’d say the op has plenty of study material here. Who needs peer reviews when you can just trigger people on forums lol

No one was talking about that. There is no issue saying objects look good by way of neutral language.

I don’t think anyone mentioned misogyny. Sexist, yea, indirectly objectifying of women, yes.

I’m not sure all of us do.

Amen to this. And exhausted having to do men’s emotional and intellectual heavy lifting, I’d gather. For anyone
confused why ascribing gender traits and characteristics to inanimate objects is problematic and creepy, it’s a very easy Google search.

I’m the OP and it’s not my paper!

I’ve seen a few of these ā€œinternet forum was badā€ academic papers on different topics over the years.

I think they always struggle with… How to avoid becoming de facto participants in the very flame war they are aspiring to rise above and study / describe.

If I was an academic in this field I’d be writing a paper on that.

Anyway, the old name for Gearspace was stupid and unpleasant, the internet features lots of men being creepy (usually just through lack of insight, we hope), and let’s all be better.

Define, exactly, what ā€˜neutral language’ is for the benefit of all mankind.

Sorry

"She’s my favorite bit of kit. I love twisting her knobs. ;)ā€

to ā€œIt’s my favorite bit of kit. It’s very playable.ā€

The touch of sexuality that would be really interesting with the material would be to be able to reproduce it. Just imagine the child of an A4 and an Ah!

How on earth can one objectify an object?

That was a test. Flagged immediately.

I’ve never seen anyone having a problem with the names of these new Moog products for being sexist and to my knowledge they are quite a progressive company, judging by the diversity and inclusiveness they display on their product intros etc, which I too like to see.

However, we are talking about synths here.

Seeing the leading judge of the American supreme court being unable to tell what a woman means as a lesser problem than some dudes calling their synths in these terms is a bit confusing to put it mildly.

Just saying.

I read it, and it’s a real eye-roller from an academic standpoint. There were a lot of statements of ā€œfactā€ without substantiating evidence or citation from the literature. Although, maybe that’s how it’s done in ā€œethnomusicology,ā€ the lead author’s field. He based his theory on some commonly used jargon that I’ve literally never seen in lurking/posting on GS for a decade. It comes off like someone with an axe to grind wrote a hit piece with a thin veneer of intellectualism (They used the word hegemony 29 times! They cited Karl Marx! They implied the users don’t have girlfriends! There are two whole tables with real numbers!)

Online forums can be toxic without everything being a stand-in for an oppressive patriarchy. Sometimes a knob is just a knob. The only positive is that no one actually paid for this ā€œresearch.ā€ The authors did it on spec, I would assume to troll GS for the lulz and try to write a follow-on.

It almost reads like one of those fake articles them guys in America did to show how messed up academia was.

I skimmed a few paragraphs of the paper. Felt like some 90s SNL sketch. Not sure if its been addressed but aren’t knobs, for example, a reference to male genitalia? So the overuse of knob would be more homoerotic than anything, no?

Try asking a woman for start. Why should there always be equal representation in all things? There are a quite a few things I frankly don’t care about or don’t care to get involved with and you’re doing me no favors trying to get me involved.

I’m a member of a canning group on social media. I’d say the membership is probably at least 80% female based on the posts I see. At no point do I say ā€œgolly, there really need to be more men in this group, it’s not very inclusiveā€. The reality is that I am in the minority as a man and just accept that this interest is primarily a feminine one in nature. There is no corporate conspiracy by Big Canning to keep men in the dark on the subject anymore than there is toxic femininity chasing the bros away.
