The words “mute” and “ignore” are somewhat arbitrary, and doesn’t really properly describe these organizing methods that have been provided in the forum software.
I use them, along with other things, to help make it easier to follow the discussions that occurs in this forum. Before that, i found it overwhelming, and missed out on discussions because of the amount of content presented in the forum.
These are just ways to make this forum make more sense, and actually be more enjoyable.
Its a shame people have to mute threads because of one forum member who seems in control. Perhaps a disclaimer at the start of the thread saying negative comments will have a zero tolerance could help.
It’s actually called “ignore”. We have been able to use that right along for quite a while.
Ignoring that member often is successful. It depends a lot on how others respond to them. It’s often the best, in my experience, to simply ignore and not respond to trolls ( until the mods arrive if they do ).
Threads on substinative topics ( like a specific product ), tend to self-correct, whereas general discussion threads, often enough can spiral down.
The “muted” option there is pretty much only useful if you want to block someone PMing you., and posting notifications. Practically no one ever PMs me, and when that rarely happens it’s actually a good thing.
The two member options i use are “Normal” and “Ignored”.
ADDED : All four thread options are useful. Forum software will automatically promote a thread status in certain circumstances, so you sometimes need to manually reset it to “normal”.
ADDED : That automatic promotion is changable in preferences and i just fixed it for me.
I wish I could see the list or at least number of members who’ve muted me. Checking the list would become part of my AM routine. I like to start out every day smiling/laughing and the thought of living rent free in the heart and mind of virtual screen names I’ll never meet irl is hilarious. I’d even share with my wife.
“Hey Bae, it ain’t just you. Look at this list of weanies!”
It’s not always that simple though. It usually takes (at least) two to tango, and the problem can appear long into a seemingly peaceful thread.
Personally I rarely put other users on ignore. As others have mentioned, a discussion may appear broken if you’ve ignored one or more users.
I find it much more effective to mute threads (I detest speculation threads), and even sub-forums (never owned a Digitakt so not much to contribute). Like Jukka said it makes the forum experience more focused and relevant.
