Mutable Instruments shutting down

I believe she is no longer interested in music but I might be wrong, anyways… it definitely wasn’t a financial decision. Good luck to her in whatever the future holds, a real smart and creative cookie. I was a heavy Bhajis Loops user about 15 years ago and have always been blown away by all she has done.

From what I have read on ModWiggler she made designs open source, both the code and hardware. Her expectation was that buyers could modify their devices, or even make one if they could not afford to purchase. She was surprised to see a cottage industry of clone manufacturers pop up using her designs. Still, she continued to make new releases open source once she had reached her goals for those modules. I don’t know what those goals were and this is info is taken from posts from another forum. It may or may not be correct.

I love this business model so much - I wish more of the world worked this way

Hardly. This is such niche, bread and butter market, that such logic doesn’t really apply here.

I believe it’s just personal reasons.

I salute any mind that produces in open source, it’s beautiful, it’s impressive,
it’s against the current, something like neo-chivalry. Especially on hardware!
I never had a euro rack and therefore none of its modules and had no chance to test its synths but my sympathy for her is total.

Oh that is a shame, since Microbe and Bhajis the talent and innovation was clear to see, then again with the desktop stuff and of course the modules - definitely one of the most significant designers in synth/electronic music history.

It’s cool! Check it out. The Marbles mod [Random Sampler] and different versions of Clouds [Texture Synthesizer] and [Arable Instruments Joni and Neil] are fun.

Bonus: you’re not limited to a budget and can have as many Marbles as your CPU allows. Not EXACTLY the same experience, but still loads of fun.

The worst part is that I already have the “Audible Instruments” pack…

If you’re getting into VCV Rack 2, @sinkingfeeling did an entire Album with it. It’s really awesome!

The shruthi was a very big deal in paving the way for not only DIY synth makers but for smaller synth companies to produce affordable yet uniquely voiced instruments (see micromonsta, etc). That osc (which morphed to the braids) is still something special. Obviously, she went on to be a pillar in the post doeppler world of eurorack but I’ll always have a soft spot for the shruthi.

 I dont understand what yer getting at

GET TO IT!

I mean that not only do I have vcv installed but also the Mutables emulation…
So it’s even more ridiculous than expected not to have tried before.

I use my pc more for drawing and playing golf than for making music.

Like many of you, I have nothing but good wishes for Emilie and think she has left an indelible mark in so many ways. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a Shruthi with the Polivoks filter after having stupidly sold it previously so that goes nicely with my Shrolca (which has a 4p ladder filter) and my Shruthi XT with 4 pole mission filter. It truly is a special synth!!! And I really like my Anushri also… maybe someday I’ll get another Ambika but in a metal case this time…

I think you’re absolutely right. Even if just look at how many different synths have the Braids/Plaits code (or variation) available for them… Microfreak, Minilogue XD, Poly Beebo, M8 Tracker, VCV, Anyma Phi, iOS ports and I’m probably forgetting more…
