Mutable Instruments shutting down

The story at Gearnews.

So sad to see this happen. MI is one of my favorite Eurorack module designers. There is a whole cottage industry of clone manufacturers creating mostly Mutable Instruments open source designs. I wonder what will become of the newer modules that are not open source? Would like to see her license them so that she gets some income if they are cloned. Anything to keep them alive and in production.

Now let’s not all go and lose our marbles :kissing_closed_eyes:

A singular talent and human. Hope she finds fulfillment in whatever she does next. Ordered a Blades today.

All modules will be open sourced, whether it be the code or schematics. She recoups expenses before releasing the files.

Doesn’t happen now, won’t happen in the future.

They certainly will be. Those iconic panels, however…

Damn that’s crazy sad news. Likewise, wishing her the best for whatever comes next.

Do you think that they will not be open-sourced once their initial production is done (just like all the other MI modules)?

Do you think that this fits with Émilie Gillet’s priorities?

How would licensing fees help to keep open-source designs in production?

Do you think that Mutable Instruments, too, has lost its focus as a company?

i Love her decision and mine to use OG Mutable Modules as my only Eurorack source.

iam thankful for all her work, sending over a lot of white Rogan Knobs and a Shruthi XT with Aluminium Panel in working condition for free!
she was cleaning her office and gifted some goods a few weeks back.

Innovative like Buchla or Serge, that different attitude for Synthesis and complex Systems. :100:

Wrt to code and instruments, absolutely.

There’s been a lot of misplaced aggression on this forum lately, ease up mate, there’s no need, there’s more constructive ways to disagree.

Love my Ambika and my Shruthi is my goto monosynth for typical 101 style Roland Basslines. Best $200 I ever spent was on my Shruthi. Sad news…

Damn, that’s a milestone in the world of music gear.

Really sad news! But happy she could make such a brave decision and follow other paths in life.

Does this mean these things are gonna skyrocket in price?

Nooooo, that’s a shame! So sad to hear!

If I recall correctly, Emilie has always been transparent about Beads being the last new module she would release but that Mutable Instruments would continue to operate until warranties expire:

I certainly won’t disappear once the new module is released. Mutable Instruments will be around for several years, and once the last module is sold, I will continue doing repairs over the warranty period of 2 years. After that, I hope I’ll have found a knowledgeable company who will be willing to do the repairs.

In the event of a more brutal termination, the availability of schematics, board file and BOMs will hopefully be sufficient for a third party to open their own repair service.

It doesn’t come as a huge surprise that Mutable modules are gradually being discontinued. Yes, it’s sad news for MI fans (myself included) but what an amazing legacy to leave behind.

I’m curious whether anyone has considered making acquisition offers for the Mutable Instruments brand. I somehow doubt that a Mutable Instruments without Emilie at the helm would be that viable but in a parallel universe where I have a big pile of cash, I’d be tempted to make that offer. Or perhaps run a crowdfunding campaign to make Mutable community owned?

Damn

What’s there to buy, when everything is open source and she’s left the game? The value in the company is her ingenuity from what I can see.

I doubt she would sell the name; I’d be curious to know who owns the panel
designs (I’d imagine Mutable)

Either way, without her behind the design, overseeing of manufacturing and customer service, it ain’t Mutable.

When Beads was announced as the final module, I wondered how long it would continue.

A shame but once you stop loving what you do, it’s time to move on.

I still need to pick up Stages to go with my Marbles, Rings and Beads.

Exactly the same here. Wonderful instruments. And a lovely personal company do deal with!

On the Mutable forum Emilie has talked candidly about how difficult it was to finish Beads. She has an exacting process for completing modules, which is why all MI modules are of such high quality, but it sounds like the process is stressful for her. I hope that whatever she chooses to do next brings her joy.

I thought this was old news. That Marbles was the last module (or something like that)

I thought MI decided this a time ago. I was surprised when Marbles came out cuz I thought they were done already
