Mutable Instruments shutting down

Glad I have so many of the modules already, and it’s great that the modules will always live on in open source. Have been wondering if I should pick up a Plaits - seems like a sensible buy now…

That the end was near is old, but that production is now actually shutting down is the news bit.

Emilie will be leaving behind an enduring legacy, as one of the most influential figures in Eurorack history.

I respect whatever she decides to do with the Mutable Instruments brand.

I think what @peterhanes is trying to point out is that Emilie made all of these decisions on her own accord. And probably for great reasons considering how capable smart and badass she is.
The weird part about OP’s proposition is that you come off as thinking you know better.
Which, I can’t say for certain, but if it’s true, that viewpoint is pretty disrespectful.

I hope that’s not what OP meant.

Stages is that one module that will always be in my rack! Nothing in the eurorack realm beats it’s versatility really…

I honestly have no idea, where you’re getting that idea?

This is what made me think that.
It sounds like that’s not what he meant though.

A giant in the Eurorack world. I hope she finds happiness in whatever endeavor she takes on!

Edit:

I might just buy a brand new beads and plaits just as collectors items…

I’m not the OP, and I still have no clue, what you mean. But let’s just leave it at that.

I sold my Clouds….what an asshole

…wooof…some of the most iconic sounds in modern electronics came from her mind…

no clue how her sonic concepts could be sooooo unique but still soooo versatile at the same time, while always recogniseable…u can always spot a mi source in whatever sonic context…

hope she’s fine…

Yeah she’s been foreshadowing this for a while. I remember a tweet of hers from a couple years back about the end of MI being a “long reverb tail”.

Well, you did say:

and to me it seemed that the second of these sentences ran on from the first. What does your second sentence mean if not related to the first?

I don’t have an opinion one way or another. I think it’s worth pointing out that she doesn’t want to “get paid”, and that’s why MI designs are open-sourced after their design expenses are recouped.

I do. I think that open-sourcing the designs is a good way to do that, and certainly better than paid licensing.

I literally quoted what you wrote in your original post. I would be very happy to read any more that you want to write (on this topic or by personal message), especially if you have any answers to my questions.

I’m not taking anything personally. I don’t know you and you don’t know me. I think that discussions should be about the topic as posted, not about about personal character or tone. I simply asked questions about what was in the original post.

Not at all. That’s not a matter for me at all.
Edit to add: if anything, I think you should leave it up. I think that open dialogue with other people is a good way to refine one’s thoughts. Thank you for posting.

And beyond. I have no intention of getting into eurorack, but I have two devices with firmware derived from her open source code. Wouldn’t surprise me at all to find myself buying more.

Same here. Never been tempted.
So maybe i will take an OG before it vanish, it’s a nice module for minicase, and i’m found of my MI row.

Seems some people are confused about my meaning, I think from the sentence “Anything to keep them alive and in production.” To clarify, I don’t normally buy clones, especially if the original manufacturer is still in business and making those modules. But if the product and the manufacturer is going away and clones are all that is available, I am happy that me and others will still have the opportunity to buy those wonderfully designed modules. To have them just go away would leave a big hole.

Love my Plaits, mainly because it is a single unit that does not need a filter or amp so you get a full voice in a single unit. I’m thinking about monitoring Reverb for a Braids. I know Plaits is newer and improved in some areas but Braids has more voice types.

So, out of curiosity, what exactly was the license agreement to use MI circuits, code, and designs? Was it basically “no charge”? Just “go for it”?

I am curious if finances were part of the decision to close up shop. This could be a very instructive lesson…IF the decision to keep things open source ultimately cause the demise of the business (I’m not assuming it did).

I believe it’s a CC-by-SA 3.0 license. Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0

My sense is that finances had nothing to do with it.
