You mean the MPC screen makes it hard to draw in stuff, like you can in a DAW? Agree, that is exactly what bothers me too, what had me sell my MPC One and what drives me to the verge of selling my new MPC Live 2 now…
But it’s definitely not because the screen is unresponsive, but because the UI relies on switching between “tools” and lots of menu diving, instead of gestures (e.g. you can’t enter a note that’s longer than grid unit by touching & dragging the finger! ).
My guess for new hardware is early June. Which jives with when their sale price ends, which is end of May. Superbooth announcement or any trade show announcement seemed odd anyways, bigger companies don’t really use trade shows for announcements anymore on flagships. They’ll get way more attention on a random day than on a day where there are 100 YouTube videos on other pieces of gear and they are fighting for attention. My official guess will be Thursday June 5th for an announcement of a new MPC Live 3.
Wouldn’t really call it flawed design, more like realistic design. If think that if they put a high end touch screen in there, prices would go through the roof, people would complain endlessly, and sales would crash. It would become this luxury item only a small segment could afford
It’s not about touch screen tech as it’s universal in how it works. Its basically if the screen itself is if its laminated. Full lamination means that the touch-sensing layer is directly and completely adhered to the surface of the display screen. Providing a better touch experience because there is no air gap. The touch sensing is more accurate and sensitive. It help but it won’t fix the clunky editing which is more software based.
I’ve got a Live OG and I love everything about it. I don’t get why people claim they need an update so much. The software and workflow isn’t perfect but it’s definitely the best tool to inspire and create. Personally, I don’t see the need for an upgrade, however…
If there is one little thing that grinds my gears, that I have deep irks about is this.
In 2022 I got the MPC specifically because they introduced interface compatibility, so thus opening insane possibilities to work with my modular via an ES9.
It worked too well for the first few months of firmware updates and then BAM. Something broke it via na update and they never fixed it.Never even acknowledged it. My ES9 works with literally everything, Mac, Windows, iOS, iPadOS, optical, even my fxcking fridge and microwave [lol].
I can live without the speaker, I can live with the plugin activation bug, the removal of clip-programs and drum-program-switching and all that. But one of the main things I bought the MP for has been broken by firmware for years and never repaired.
The things is that IT WAS THERE. It worked for everyone like it supposed to. But now I have to refer to some list on a forum to see which interface works. I’m not buying another interface. I and a bunch of other people just need Akai to fix [or to acknowledge and prioritise fixing] this Class Compliant Interface issue.
Yep. I ended up with a Force (with current OS) after prices fell, and it lives happily next to a Live mk1 still running 2.15. Each interface has its own best uses, but I know a lot of the functions already and both boxes can share the same synth plugs and homemade sample library.
It’s a little like having two boxes with the Electron sequencer; learn the concepts once and then the skills transfer.
In the context of the project I was working on this morning MV was handling all of the vocals (16 tracks each layerable with overdub takes). Air fx are better than I thought they’d be but Roland’s are legendary.
MV is a nifty little unit. Very fast for songwriters. One of those great ones history will reflect on. Key features are how focused it is. Dog easy and filled to the brim with great sounds and fx. Like Live 2 you can finish complete songs from beat production to vocal recording, mixing and mastering all in one. If you want a great touchscreen it integrates with iOS thru Roland Zenbeats which is also a nifty little DAW available for all platforms from iOS to Android, Mac to PC.
As much as I love it, Live 2 will ultimately replace it except when I really need to get surgical with vocals.
