Post an image for the most iconic album cover you can think of. Focus on things like design, artistry, visual impact, basically all the stuff that has nothing to do with whether or not the music is good (however we all love good music so don’t hold back just because the tunes are nice too )
Inspired by this recent find regarding the cover for Fatboy Slim - You’ve come a long way, baby:
The early/pre-internet misconception that a lot of people shared was that this was Fatboy Slim, as opposed to that nice, inconspicuous young lad from the Housemartins.
Blue Note Records had the most iconic album covers to me. The designs that were instantly recognizable, had nice typography, great photography, and were visually impactful. Really created a cohesive look across the entire brand.
All these covers had something that was calling me.
I would know I would like the sound before listening to the album…
To get some context, my parents were listening to classical music, so everything else I had to go fishing in the library at 20km from where I was living,
The hunger was as huge as my ignorance.
This was also a pretty iconic album cover. I remember when I started digging for records 20+ years ago, every thrift store would have one of these in their bin for like $.50, sometimes $.25.
Jane’s Addiction - Nothing’s Shocking has had probably the most visual impact on me of possibly any album cover ever, but at a minimum when I was a teenager and it came out the shit was mind blowing.
To later hear the story from Perry Farrell in an interview about how this was sort of an art project that he and his girlfriend at the time had literally constructed these statue characters and staged a photoshoot made it twice as impressive.
oh man, this thread makes me miss cds and casettes, never was really into vinyl but did spend hours looking at the cd/cassette inlets, reading every word printed there…
