This is one of those album covers where just by looking at it, I am transported into the album, and the sounds are already echoing inside my head.
Yeah every thrift store had at least 8 of these back around 99-2000. Ol’ Herb was the co-founder of A&M records and I think there must have been some kind of mail/subscription service where people just got this sent to them whether they wanted it or not.
Quick non cover note that Bass on Top by Paul Chambers is one of the greatest double bass records of all time and I’ve still found nothing else that sounds like that first track.
Billy Joel’s early dalliance with prog rock/metal circa 1969 made for a nice album cover. I recommend giving it a listen, it might just change your opinion of the man.
As it seems to be all male artists and bands above apart from my JNew post, here are some albums by women with iconic covers, or should be seen as iconic covers:
Actually iconic so much there’s an article about it:
Any of these, couldn’t pick. Love how bonkers and different they are while still strangely consistent:
My favourite album cover in recent memory:
The most actually iconic album of this year so much so that we’re probably tired of people talking about it. But she’s playing round the corner here in Greenwich tonight and just saw loads of fans at the station. Wish I were there but young kids etc.
One of those I don’t know why it looks so good when it’s just a portrait things but that’s the power of photography:
And one of the greatest actually coherent concept albums of all time with a perfectly matching cover:

Pretty much this one, minus Radiohead and Beach House:
something about the dark to light gradient / ombre tone of the water in the background is surreal and hypnotic. makes the plank/diving board/person feel very… stranded, or isolated. very interesting image.
When it was on Tidal they animated it and I just stared at it for probably a full minute
