Moog Muse

InMusic guy: We were thinking of calling the new synth the Mirror, since it’s like you see a reflection of yourself in the sounds that it can make.

Moog guy: That’s cool, but we’ve been doing this “mother” theme for a while. Mother-32, Grandmother, Matriarch. So logically this synth would be the, uh…

InMusic guy: …

Moog guy: …

Moog guy: Mirror is cool.

You just know that Grandma Phatty or Pregnant Stepdaughter were going to be next.

Other Moog names that didn’t make the cut:

Could “Mirror” be a nod towards bitimbrality? One of the unexpected aspects of their new Mariana softsynth, for example, is that it’s dual-layer. Maybe that’s where their heads are at lately?

Seems like a reasonable guess - two matriarchs in one box a la UDO Gemini or Novation Summit?

Goddess, Gaia, Empress…?

But I’m guessing Mirror because it’s bi-timbral, 4+4. Maybe they’ll do something weird with that, like some NOT logic for interesting playing styles, or mod x-fades between the timbres.

I hope it distinguishes itself from the Trigon enough actually.

Different companies, but for me, I’d go Sequential if it was basically a Moog-skinned Trigon.

So, hopefully it’s 8 voices, has some deeper modulation ability, ala Voyager and sits in that high, but comfortable for high end $4000 range ala 3rd Wave, Gemini, OB-X8 range.

Honestly though, with the Trigon and Gemini both being absolutely gorgeous synths with ladder filters and features like discrete oscillators (Trigon) or digital oscillators (Gemini) it probably has some stiff competition in that arena.

Or, maybe it really is an olive branch to the musicians that want a Moog poly, but can’t pay those types of prices. I actually could see that being the case. That would in fact differentiate itself from those fairly saturated markets and price-points, and all of the current Moog paraphonic and monophonic synths in the $2000 range.

Just speculating of course.

I like this, but then they try to get cute with it and call it Moog Too.

They better have a factory preset called “drama”.

is it possible that it could be bitimbral but with each timbre being paraphonic?

The sliders made me think of the Opus 3, but there aren’t enough sliders in the pictures for that to check out

May I ask what’s wrong with the keys on the Moog One? I believe it has the Fatar TP8 which, at least for me, are the best keys I’ve played… so curious to hear other views.

TP keybeds have always felt great to me! I haven’t tried the new PolyAT one though.

I think it’s possible they lower the price and maintain the quality, as they’re manufacturing these outside the US I assume. Sequential have no problem maintaining their prestige even though their synths cost markedly less than those of Moog. This could potentially be their answer to the Trigon-6, it seems perverse that Sequential make the most accessible 3VCO/ladder filter poly.

Moog Three. Plot twist, it’s another model D re-issue and they just named it after the number of oscillators so people stop complaining about how much more expensive the Model D gets every time.

Dave had that one more trick up his sleeve, RIP.
