Miserable git's general and non-specific (but very inclusive) whingeing thread - If you've got thoughts about stuff, I'm your guy (Part 1)

Insane!

I’m kind of amazed that a water heater requires an installation of a calendar device in the electrical closet next to the circuit breaker. This is really not a good design, reset requirement aside.

You installed a water heater by yourself, plumbing and all? Impressive.

Sounds like time for

Yes

Normally you don’t need such little device, if the installation was done properly.
Usually there is a thing that automatically shifts on/off at night.
But yeah, this one is special, I preferred to install a clock.

And yeah, I am really glad I made it alone. Was quite some work, I learned a lot

I’m trying to purge the internal memory from my tablet over to the PC via a USB connection and after [checks clock] an hour, the dialog box for the transfer now says “About 1 day remaining”.

Ah false alarm, it now says 15 minutes.

Get your shit together, windows.

Yours reboots? I’m usually left with BSOD, but it took win11 right in the butt USBooty port w/o an issue……

I’ve started running media player on mute in the background so that it thinks I’m active and won’t push the updates, which worked for a while, but now it only works about half of the time and will still pop up to remind me, which if I don’t respond, it will still restart on it’s own.

We used to command these machines, now we work to appease them and then bend to their will. What about this paradigm could possibly be concerning to anyone for the future??

Peak UX.
It happened to the only production computer on windows, on my previous job.
The computer forced the installation of Win10, which absolutely killed everything that was running on this machine.
It took a few days to get it back on its feet.

But yes, for years humans used tools, it often feels like it’s the opposite, nowadays…

True dat.

Another incident at the same place:

A group of Caribbean guys were hanging around the van, and one rough looking guy was asking the jerk chicken man loads of questions about his suppliers and his cutlery and all kinds of weird stuff, then telling him what he should be doing to expand his business.

I could sense there was an atmosphere building so I hung around for a moment - to be clear I’d be absolutely useless in a physical confrontation, but was at least bigger than the chicken guy, so could try and give the appearance of backup.

Eventually chicken guy ran out of patience and told this dude he didn’t have time to answer his questions all day - to which the prick predictably got super mouthy and started threatening violence.

At this point the nice little chicken guy stepped out of his van with his massive knife and declared if this bloke took one more step toward him he’d get sliced from his throat to his bollocks.

I wasn’t needed.

I hate witnessing violence in the street, it makes me crazy shots of adrenaline and I must use all my consciousness to calm down.
Doesn’t happen much fortunately.

The sound of flesh loudly hitting the street is the worst.

One time in Brooklyn I was in a Little Caesar’s waiting for my pizza and I saw a guy open-hand smack another guy in the face just for getting slightly in his way.

It freaked me out but I still hung around to claim my greasy melty cheese heap.

There is no correct answer in many of these situations. Vegetius famously said “Si vis pacem, para bellum”. If you want peace, prepare for war.

This is not my preferred outlook on life but it’s a very unpredictable world.

For the optimists this is probably a toxic mentality, but many optimists are either short on life experience or have learned to accept this and still live their lives regardless.

The danger is in people who deny the reality and exchange preparedness for extra optimism. I have seen and myself felt some of the consequences of being the more naive variety which has perhaps inspired some of the latter type of thinking.

It can also lead to the most erratic of character changes in some of these people as well.

The only time I was thrown to the ground was by a cop. I was peacefully talking to a friend in a wheel chair on the side of the road next to a protest…
It took me a few week to digest the absolute hatred I was feeling in response to the injustice.
If I ever get into a fight, it will be because there is absolutely no other alternative. And it will be to inflict the maximum damage, cause I’ll get only one shot, like Ender in Scott Card’s book.
But once you get into a battle, you are never sure to win. Which is why I prefer to avoid it. Swallowing my pride is way easier than repairing my back.
