Micromonsta 2

I had to use Firefox on Manjaro Linux to get the update to work (on a second attempt), for what it’s worth - Chrome, Chromium and Opera (edit for clarification: on Linux) all failed to recognise the MM2 as a midi device.

There is some kind of a weird bug in Linux that prevents sending quickly lots of continuous SYSEX data.
There is a workaround in the code just for Linux, even if I do not support it.

Chrome does seem to work on other platforms, from the feedback I got.
Did you try Chrome on Windows/MacOS?

I did not as Firefox on Linux worked OK eventually ; I don’t have any MacOS devices and my work Windows 11 laptop doesn’t have Chrome installed (and I don’t have admin permissions to install a lot of software on it either).

It’s not one of the system/configuration options so far as I can tell.

So is it possible? Thanks

No, there is no catch mode, assign filter cutoff to an encoder in quick edit menu if you don’t want jumps

Ah OK, I thought from your previous post stating Chrome doesn’t detect MM2 that you tried Chrome on all platforms (which was not in line with the feedback I had from other users).

Ah sorry; I should maybe have been more specific - I’ve edited my post in case it causes any future confusion.

Thanks for the clarification:)

After 12 months on the waitlist my number was up and I got an order in for batch 10, which just arrived today!

I only had less than an hour to test it out before work, and my initial impressions are good, but I was running into a midi problem that sucked up all my time trying to troubleshoot, so I thought I’d pick your brains to figure out what I’m missing.

Basically I can’t seem to get the MM2 to accept midi notes from a controller. I have major space constraints and so I was hoping to just be able to plug in a little keyboard or set of pads when using it at a desk or on the couch. The internal keyboard of the MM2 does work, and will do in a pinch, but I’d prefer an external controller over the little clicky buttons.

I initially tried this cheap, battery powered mini-keyboard (Lekato SMK-25 Mini) over TRS with no luck. Next I tried Ableton Move via USB and it still wasn’t responding. Just to rule out the mini-keys being busted or the Move just not being compatible, I also tried the S-1 over TRS and still nothing.

Of course I double checked all the channel and I/O settings, made sure the cables worked and cross-checked everything by plugging those three other devices into each other and everything was functioning as expected.

As a final test I connected the MM2 to Ableton Live. It was recognized as a midi destination, but oddly, when I used the computer keyboard to play notes nothing happened, but if I programmed a midi clip and played it I was getting a response finally!

So at the very least I know incoming midi is working, it just doesn’t seem to want to play notes coming in from a controller. I skimmed through the midi sections of the manual and tried an internet search but didn’t find anything that helped.

Sorry for the long-winded post, but I wanted to try to pre-empt any of the usual questions and this really has me confused so I wanted to be thorough.

Hope somebody can help me figure out what I’m doing wrong here.

Do you have a midi cable and 2 adapters? One came with mm2 i believe.

Move and mm2 don’t work over usb I think, someone further up tested that I believe. And I know I had struggles with some piece of kit (mm2?) when just using a regular stereo 3.5mm between midi source and synth

Controllers defo work though, did you set the ableton live midi track monitor (so it turns blue)?

Ah man, if the Move and Micromonsta don’t work together that’s a major bummer. They would be a great travel pair.

I do have two adapters and a midi cable. I can give that a try when I get home, but I tested the TRS cable between the Lekato and the S-1 and it worked so I didn’t think the cable was the issue.

I had the midi monitoring in Live set to auto so I’ll also try that out when I get home.

Thanks for the help.

Yeah, I ended up going with a Nektar USB to MIDI switch hosted by Move for similar scenarios

Mm2 also mentioned in the Move thread: Ableton Move : User Thread - #617 by krunchr

There are 2 TRS types: A and B.
MM2 is A iirc.

Whoops forgot to add an update to this.

It might not have been clear in my post, but I did successfully use the Lekato mini with the S-1 to confirm that it was Type A and should have worked with the MM2. I appreciate you mentioning that though, because it’s an easy thing to overlook.

I contacted Samuel and we diagnosed the issue as a faulty jack, which was likely an error from the component manufacturer because the contact terminals aren’t where they should be. We quickly got that sorted out and resolved to have it sent back for repair. These things happen and the device build is rock solid in all other aspects, so no complaints on my end.

Before we got there I was using it standalone with a Launchpad Pro Mk2 through a USB midi host box I forgot I had (thanks to the suggestion from @DavidL) and was having a great time with it exploring the sounds and sequencing the two layers independently. Fantastic synth!
