Damn that’s so great ! This dude is a wizard, his OT videos are a bible. I think I’m more happy about this than the Tonverk lol

Great video, and great to see him posting again. Went through a few of his old videos again after this and I am moderately craving an Octa again, even though I did not vibe with it the first time.

IMO Elektron has kind of locked themselves into not being able to release an improved Octatrack. Imagine just they leave it as is and: all FX engines updated, few new ones added, doubled FX slots on each track, simpler and better i/o signal handling/recording (don’t lynch me), 4 to 8GB RAM, and Overbridge. With the zealous following the OT already has they would have to price it at 3K to avoid people not buying their other stuff any more. And that would of course deservedly bring in a lot of bad publicity.

Jordan just put the number 23 back on. Wow! I’m so glad dude is doing well!

Honestly I don’t get why they’d need to release an Octatrack 3 with just more everything. OT exists, it’s a fine piece of gear and other than the FX it hasn’t aged at all, it’s just as capable as it was when first released.

To me, that would be the opposite of innovation.

Market for 3k hardware samplers is small, not sure how big of a cash cow it would be.

You would be surprised, also it’s in their portfolio of products, new version come over time, it’s normal

They seem to be operating more like gaming console manufacturers. Release a device and later put out an upgraded version that irons out little flaws in the original design while basically keeping the same functions and limitations.

Yeah, many companies seams to follow this path

The real straw that broke the camels back moment for me was the low encoder resolution… Its ok when you have shorter samples but when you start using longer loops, things like sample start or end become extremely low res.

Its a cool machine never the less

I was talking about improving the already existing product. To me DTII is a much better product that DT today. I also feel like I should slowly update my phone as it’s lacking a few modern features, RAM, and speed after 5 years. Same goes for gaming consoles. I much prefer the gaming experience of the PS5 compared to the PS4, even if we would keep it to “it’s the same product apart from being a bit faster”. I do agree PS5 pro is a bit of a stretch though, but it’s also marketed as an incremental/half update - and I do not intend to upgrade to it. If I was buying a PS5 today, it would definitely be a pro though.

That’s why i was asking for zoom on all machines on dt2, like we have in slice machine

Yeah but thats the thing, PS5 is not an upgraded PS4. PS4 Pro was, and Elektron has developed Octatrack Mk2. That’s what Elektron does. Their PS5 would be Toneverk, but I guess the analogy breaks down somewhat because Toneverk isn’t even trying to be a better Octatrack, but a new kind of device. Octatrack is still available and still a great device, no need to replace it.

I don’t think it’s about specs so much as it is about ideas. Making another Octatrack or not isn’t the point of the commentary (on innovation) that I understood. It’s more about having creative talent inside a team with radical ideas that are a little bit more “out there” or on the wild side and taking that gamble. Less conservative and risk-averse design choices.

Can you guys think of gear from the past 5 years that would have the same amount of innovation Elektron had back in their golden era (whatever that is, Octatrack and A4 or earlier)? Curious about who would be considered a truly innovative company making music gear after Elektron.
