M8 Tracker

Havent tried vocals yet, just drums. Not sure if there is traditional type timestretch

I think I saw that the sampler has timestretch on it, but im not sure.

There isn’t timestretch, but there’s some ways to hack an approximation of a timestretch by assigning the playhead to LFO: Dirtywave M8 Tracker - Timestretching and Slicing Audio on a Hand Held Tracker - YouTube

Interesting. I could probably get by with that. I use time stretch so much though, that im not sure. Its on my OT and MPCs plus in ableton so im super used to having it. Very helpful on breaks and loops.

I need to look into the time stretching hacks at some point. For now I just accept it as a minor issue on an otherwise brilliant piece of kit.
If I really need time stretching I can use my OT

Apparently you can save the timestretch setup as an instrument preset, then you just replace the sample after you load the preset

Yeah thats a nice little workaround. I mean the Octatrack timestretch is like 10 years and the MPC lives is nothing special, so I just need some kind of way to do it.

Can you resample on the M8 and load the new sample into a new instrument? I’d imagine that should be possible.

Yes you can

Ill do a video recording this weekend, but my weekly beats #1 is M8 as the midi sequencer driving a machinedrum, digitone, Octatrack and 104hp intellijel palette. It works very well. Digitone, like normal, has a rough time staying in perfect sync when its not the master, but its liveable.

I would not use M8 for a workflow that requires good time stretching. It’s not something that can be improved much due to the nature of the device and how it works with samples. (limited ram, sample streaming from sd)

Thaks, good to know. Im not sure how much I need the timstretching since I figure I can just import a sample, truncate and chop it, and then pitch up or down the chops. I think I leave warp on sometimes on the MPC just to lengthen some of the chops so they don’t chipmunk too much. MPC’s time stretch is really not that great, I am basically just trying to get the timing right of each chop when I pitch it up or down.

The M8 is so good at so many things, I don’t sweat the couple things it’s not as good at. I make all my own samples and loops, so I just try to do a lot of different tempos and pitches when I’m prepping them

Hello Tim, I cannot find a way to save my sample slice markers to file. For whatever reason I am having trouble figuring out what I’m doing wrong. After I process the different sample slice functions in the sample edit window, when I save the sample, so I can leave the edit window, the slice markers disappear and when the sample is set to file, there is no response in the phrase window in triggering the slices. What am I doing wrong? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I appreciate all your work on this device!

So after you run the slice function that you want, can you navigate up to the “slice marker” and step through that to see the different slices? For example, if I run “slice: 008” to insert slice markers to split my sample into 8 equal sections, if I go up “slice marker” and select “01” I’d expect to see something like this, with 1/8th of my wave highlighted:

Do you see that?

If so, do you go to SAVE or OVERWRITE? If SAVE pay attention to the folder you’re saving the sliced sample in. Is it maybe a different folder than where you’re loading it from for the instrument?

If you’re sure you have the right file, what happens when you load it into the sample instrument and go back into the editor? You ought to still be able to see the slices by browsing through “slice marker” as before. Can you?

If so, how are you trying to play the slices back? Are you setting “SLICE” property of the sample instrument to “FILE”? If so, are you playing C-1 in your phrase for the first slice, D-1 for the second, E-1 for the third, etc?

Thank u for your reply. I got a better result when i took the sample and saved it first and then did the auto slicing and then saved it again and it worked. Thank you again

Also make sure there are no loop markers too. I do not think it currently works if there are both loop markers (both “loop region” values should be set to 0) and slice markers in the same file.

Ok thanks. I was loading files I had on the sd previously and it worked for me when I renamed the files first and then tried auto slice and saved again. Thank you for the support

Would you consider the option of time stretching a sample offline, as part of sample edit (vs. real time)?

I imagine that you are already dealing with memory constraints even just for the code, and that time stretching might not be trivial to implement, but it certainly would be convenient (for me!).
