I tried an experiment with the table note map but I’m not clear about the use of it. Advice appreciated please :

I wanted to use it to route incoming notes to individual aux tables specified by the row positions in the table.

So first test I succeeded in mapping notes to play individual samples by setting different INS commands on each table row.

The prob I found though is that the notes also still pitch the samples which isn’t very useful.

I need the different samples triggered by each note to play at normal speed so I tried adding pitch offsets in each table row to correct it but it doesn’t appear to exactly compensate.

So Q - is there a way to decouple the trigs from the note information or a different workaround?

Also :

I then tried using the pads on my Nord Drum 3P as a midi controller to trigger the samples in the table. It kind of works but the sounds play so briefly only a tic is audible. It also appears to only trig one table row despite the pads being correctly mapped to send the appropriate notes matched to the table over the global channel. Any idea how to correct it please, anyone?

Did you use the N column in the table to do the transposition?

I don’t have any experience with ND3P but it sounds like a note-off message is being sent quickly. Can you hook it up to a MIDI monitor of some sort to see what it is doing?

  • Yes

I thought it sounded like an immediate not off but im not clear how to fix it, I cant find anything in the Nord documentation with options for that.

I don’t know why you’re getting pitch glitches in your use of the note map. If you post a bundle to the Discord someone might be able to advise. You can also ask there about the Nord Drum, or drop something into the associated thread here. I don’t think that’s so much an M8 matter.

Ta. I wish it wasn’t all on Dischord, I really dislike it.

It is not the greatest, I agree.

what are the envelope settings for the instruments in the M8?

Paired the M8 with the S-1 for something that probably resembled DnB at some point but ended up somewhere else by the end. My first experiment using the external instrument option on the M8, and like most things on the M8 it was a total joy and just worked exactly like I wanted it too

Is the M8 workflow inspiring for noodling around and coming up with song ideas, or does it lean more toward realising existing ideas (or both!)?

My last experience with trackers was OctaMED on the Amiga which was purely sample based and not great for noodling, but I expect things have moved on a bit since then!

I’d say both. For me, it’s more about whether you’re averse to programming vs playing in your music, if that makes sense.

The tracker workflow doesn’t lend itself to shredding. It’s more like ”okay, let’s surgically position these values so that after I’m done, this amen break is FUBAR”

That does make sense thanks, and I like programming music machines. But I’m not great at coming-up with ideas in my head.

The Elektron sequencer is pretty similar to a tracker, in many ways. You have a loop running and then you modify it – not playing live, but something like it

EDIT: oh yeah trackers are familiar to you. Oh well, maybe this helps still!

For noodling, the FM synth is bottomless. So much so that I can personally hardly finish anything on this machine. I just loose myself in experimenting

Thanks, that sounds great and just what I’m after!
