M8 Tracker

I think using them together is pretty seamless. I don’t really do anything complicated though, and mostly just used them both in standalone.

When I have paired them, I might sample one device to the other. I use the OP XY keyboard to play the M8. The M8 is also much better for large sample storage, so I sometimes just sample a sound contained on the M8 into the OP XY. I think, I’ve played and sampled a loop from the M8 through the OP XY’s fantastic eq (the one with the 3 vent things) in the past, but not regularly.

I’ve never tried the MIDI Knobs assign, but I think I’ll give that a go. I was watching a video from Near Tao on knob assignment on the M8 earlier, so I’m going to try that out with some internal Midi CC assignments.

I’m thinking how powerful the Table note map function could perhaps be as a midi converter.

for example, I have a midi fighter that will only send out specific notes per button, wondering if its possible to use the note map to route each button to a table with specific instructions for each.

Also Nord Drum 3P won’t allow sending to different midi channels from each pad, it will only send a specified note for each pad. Thinking if it would be possible to use table note to route each pad hit and its velocity to a different sample or synth track on M8 … any ideas, anyone?

I’m not seeing a lot of info about table note map in the manual unless I missed it somehow - does anyone know if there is a chart or something breaking down which note triggers each step in the table?

Edit (thinking of this in transit) - is it just user defined by the note in the left column? If so how does velocity map work, is it broken down into zones ie incoming velocity 0-8 triggers the first row?

Much welcome explanation!

Adding to this, @sleepside shows a practical application of this (“punch-in FX”) in a video:

Made me realize I have to update this section to include the new octave and velocity map options. In fact, I should do a general sweep of the 6.x changelogs (not everything needs to be written about, though). I think the big stuff is in, like the considerable LPP mode improvements.

Someone on the discord rightly pointed out that my video is more like a toggle than a true punch-in.

You can get closer using teemac’s trick of calling other tables from your note map table

I just found @jeejee YouTube and Bandcamp. They’ve got some bangers on there! I highly recommend y’all give it a listen.

I haven’t posted about new M8 compilations in a minute. There’s three of them: one about Kaiju and weird time signatures, one on “-wave” genres and nature sounds, and one on using tables to the max.

@ddmm64 made some dark and acidy IDM as well as a generative glitch/harsh noise instrument that morphs via tables

@JackiesFridge made a spooky theme tune for a giant Japanese skeleton monster, plus a pair of brassy, melodic, cinematic tunes

@Bearcage made some haunted circus music in 7/8 and a pair of instrumental new wave songs

@miscbill made zany prog-keygen music in 7/8 (mostly)

@nickypy made chip music with driving drums and melancholy melodies

@Dustsucker made water-themed dubstep with aggro vocals, plus a 7/8 dark rave boss battle theme song:

@Sasquatchfuzz made some postapocalyptic acid in 7/8

And I made an ambient 90s-JRPG-with-wubs track, plus a beat-switching military-march-into-Eastern-European-folk-dance… thing

Well this is a fun little set up!
My first time trying the Parkstool with anything, and such a joy with the simple but brilliant auto CC mapping on the M8. Another for my growing list of M8 features I wish for on Elektron gear

I ordered on current window looking forward to it. As I planned to use it while travelling I also ordered the ambient switches to get rid of the clack sound or reduce it anyway. Has anyone made this mod and did it make a difference? Was it easy to switch them out? Cheers

I am using the ambient switches and I like them a lot. They’re much quieter and I feel like I’m less annoying for my partner when we’re in the same room.

The swap was easy. Just make sure to pull the switches straight up, and to check the legs on the new switches are all straight before pushing them in.

Which quiet switches did you get? There are twilights and some other thing, sunset maybe? I tried both and much prefer the ones with a higher actuation force.

I got these. Didn’t pay much attention to the technical specs thought they was all the same.

Did you remove the keycaps first then the switches?

I swapped out for the ambients silent linear twilight switches, they’re significantly quieter than the ones that came with it, but they do still clack a little if you bottom them out, but much better for use on the sofa or in bed while my wife is reading.

Also went for some rounded keycaps.

I did. Use a keycap puller, or just do it carefully with your fingers. Same for the keys themselves.

I don’t see your image from above, but I prefer the Twilight (linear / 35gf) over the Nocturnal (linear / 20gf). That’s personal preference though. Sound-wise they’re both the same afaict.

These would be cool too:
