My Zoia and the two Chase Bliss pedals I own have TRS MIDI but i’ve only used the Zoia MIDI functions - just connecting a keyboard to play synth patches.
Sounds like factory just got Trash80/DirtyWave’s order/specs wrong on the TRS part, unless I misread something. I’m personally fine with Trash80’s call to go ahead with dropping the Type B jack to avoid holding up production, although I respect the right of other customers to feel differently.
Yeah, I don’t suppose the midi will be THAT big a deal breaker- I think the idea is just to use this standalone anyway- maybe using a midi controller which will be USB.
I don’t see myself going gear-heavy ever again to where I’d be broken by the limited midi universality.
More battery power is definitely the greater advantage
The midi thing: there are 2 trs midi formats a and B - they basically swap the tip and ring on a 3.5mm jack. The new official standard is a, but some brands released gear with b before this (eg novation). The original plan on M8 was to have a switch between the two, but there was a technical difficulty and it was decided to remove the switch and have only a. As long as you have the a adapter to din midi it doesn’t make any difference. No other gear (except elektron small new boxes I think) has switching between the two formats. Just to be clear: there are NOT two standards for din midi, only for trs midi. And you can get adapters to twitch between a and b if you really need to control plug trs into trs on other gear (I have no trs midi gear so it’s not an issue)
I don’t think M8 acts as a USB midi host sadly which rules out a lot of the really tiny controllers with out an additional midi host device to translate. Part of the reason I ended up doing the OMX-27 DIY nice feeling tiny melodic midi controller.
I dimly recall that if you want to use a MIDI keyboard or something with M8 Tracker, you have to plug into the MIDI DIN port, on account of no USB host functionality - per trash80’s post.
I’ll probably use my Keystep 37, which has MIDI DIN, if I do turn to a music keyboard for input
That is unfortunate, true- but I’m just trying to satiate my fiddly desire to get away from the poison of my phone- this is still the best device for that. If I want to attach it to a more traditional music input method I’ll bring it in with my maschine and KK.
I’m only month away from the horizon of receiving the m8
Yeah looking at how copy paste and stuff works on the M8 it seems like it will be plenty fast to edit and arrange just on the device itself. Although it is nice just to play notes sometimes.
I don’t know if timestamps work in embedded links, but man - hats off to this crazy sonic-the-hedgehog track at ~47min -
damn - this shows off so much of the potential… classic beat freakery, acid, sid leads… would love some insight into the custom ‘presets’ (is that what they are called?) used to create these sounds…
I think the sound engines are currently a chip synth called Wavsynth, the Braids oscillators from Mutable Instruments, a 4 OP FM synth and a Sampler mode. I want to say they all sort of share some DNA with a multimode filter, envelopes, lfos, FX sends… so yeah a lots of depth in those engines to make cool stuff.
I’m probably gonna nab a replacement for my worn out Koss Porta-pros for my M8. Love those headphones and they’re the kind of thing where I wouldn’t care too much if they got damaged or lost during travel.
I ordered a single one for the early bird price to help out ! i was planning on buying two but could not afford it, all the music i have made so far has just been with the 50$ teensy 4.1 (headless M8) setup!
been a wild ride so far, been using headless since version 1.01 and now were on 2.0.4 !
