M8 Tracker

Seconded!

Sometimes i think of writing an basic programm, with goto- und gosub-commands, jumping into subroutines aka tables and so on…all in all, itĀ“s great to composing a song, ā€œcodingā€ an generative ambientpatch or just doodling around…and never felt to be locked into an 16step pattern like…ok, elektron has it songmode now…

i would say yes. i have a ā€œsynthā€ template so i can quickly use mine as an 8 voice sound source using the wide variety of synth engines. its helped negate some GAS because anytime i see a new little desktop synth i try to use the M8’s engines to get somewhere close and my GAS subsides ever so slightly

Is this a leaked image of M8 mk2?

ā€œI also never could get into re-noise for example, but found the M8 very compellingā€

I bought renoise, did a few hours of tutorials and have never opened the program since. That’s been a couple years ago  I just wasn’t up for it and the screen was so cluttered to me. M8 is a whole other beast. Absolute joy to work on

I feel the same with Renoise. On paper it’s perfect, but it’s just not for me.

Where can I buy this paper Renoise?

So I just realized the Roland S-1 is pretty much the perfect companion for the M8.

  • Battery-powered
  • TRS MIDI (same type as M8 if I’m not mistaken), so no need for USB hosting solutions
  • Keyboard sends MIDI notes
  • Knobs send MIDI CC
  • Has audio input (that only acts as a mixer though)
  • And, well, is a freaking 4-voice polyphonic 101.

I knew Amazon liked trackers, but that takes the biscuit (or cookie)…

STOP

(I at least should have the m8 in hand before buying the s1 for the battery-powered MIDI controller purpose… lol)

Edit:

I’ve done this. It is good.

Indeed, S-1 doesn’t act as an A/D to transmit the incoming audio over USB. But if that doesn’t matter for you, it’s a really fun setup.

I’m liking the Audiothingies Micromonsta 2 with the M8 for this reason. It’s the same MIDI TRS specification, so I just need a mini TRS cable, no adapters! It isn’t battery powered though, so a power source is needed, but still a pretty decent portable setup:

The tracker is great with these multitimbral instruments.

I’m still pretty new to the M8 and I observed the same thing. It makes it less likely to fall into the dreaded ā€œloop trapā€ with this system. I think it’s actually making me approach other hardware in a similar way: the other day I had an Octatrack session and got the arranger (song mode) involved far earlier than I usually do, and I found myself making a lot more bars.

It’s funny how this stuff works. I like Renoise a lot, but the connection between the pattern matrix (song arrangement) and the pattern editor is not as strong as the connection between song view and phrases on the M8. The M8 really encourages making arrangements, at least for me.

easy peasy

I just think it’s a shame that the S1 can’t handle local off. Then we would have a small battery-powered setup with a tiny keyboard.
