M8 Tracker

Anyone know when the next batch is due?

Did I miss the window for pre-orders or does Dirtywave not do that?

GAS

Subscribe to the news letter on the site. The last drops were announced through email and were released for ordering over multiple Monday mornings at like 7:00am Pacific time. Each batch usually sold out pretty quick but if you get on in that first 30 minutes or so on one of the drop days you can get one. As a one man show, I don’t think he likes to give etas until he has a production run ready to go.

Will do, and thanks!!

Excited to try out M8 headless on the steam deck. If it works well that may be plenty enough for me (who am I kidding the GAS will probably be even stronger )

Have fun with the steam deck (you’ll still probably want the real deal haha)

I’d add that judging from other small one person shop companies, I think pre orders are kind of a nightmare logistically unless you are getting the money upfront as the component supply needed can be a massive moving target with cancellations, etc. Even if you do get the money up front, you are then beholden to the global supply chain to fulfill everything in time to satisfy folks who have put money down already.
In terms of Dirtywave, they now have a decent enough customer base where supporting that base, manufacturing new runs, and putting out these awesome updates is enough to not have the pre order folks also on the hook waiting for shipping updates. The good news he seems to have a solid system and should hopefully continue releasing them periodically. Plus it’s not like a cirklon or other high end beast where you’ll have to wait years.

Looking at his patreon (Trash80) it seems like the last batch went out last November or so?

Ah, ok (From Trash80s patreon on Feb 14th):

Quick note - If you are waiting to order a M8: I am waiting on part status checks and final prototype of a few minor hardware changes before I have dates to announce or open any sort of preorder.

Seems like it could be a while. Just gotta stay frosty!

Keep your eye on reverb and the sales here as well. Occasionally they pop up with someone that isn’t price gauging.

They also come up on the discord sometimes, especially in the Gear Bartering channel

Two listed on Reverb for $750 rn, which I would actually pay if I had the money and was really motivated, but have my hands full with Digitakt.

Third one listed for $1,600 :skull:

Thanks for the advice, everyone!

It’s interesting, I have a digitakt, digitone, and a polyend tracker, yet the M8 still really calls to me. If the PE Tracker had more power (more project memory, stereo samples, and some built in (perhaps mutable braids/plaits engines)) that would be incredible, but alas it doesn’t and likely will not gain any of these features in future.

M8 headless first on steam deck (SD card should come tomorrow) and we’ll see what comes next!

funny enough, i had the same lineup of hardware before i got my m8. i have since sold all the others, the only one i really want back is the digitone but thats just because i had an easier time coming up with progressions on it. the m8 has taken over the rest of my music production for the most part

Interestinggg!!

It could happen to me, as well. Of those three the Digitone will definitely stay, no matter what. At the moment I only really use the Digitakt for interfacing with my eurorack - I really need to utilize it more. I quite enjoy the PE Tracker for midi sequencing, or futzing about with VSTs and whatnot. Who knows!

just managed to snag one of these off of reverb last minute in anticipation of a 2 month long trip starting next week. so curious and excited to see what kind of stuff this guy is capable of ! been lurking and appreciating it for a while . cant wait to give it a spin .

If I understood correctly, the upcoming version of m8 will have usb-c and different aluminum enclosure, right?
What about the battery? 6 hrs is not much

Oh really? Didnt realise he was putting USB-C in

i think he said on the discord that usb c isnt happening any time soon because of parts delays that are like a year long, i may be wrong though

I had a bit of a breakthrough moment with the m8 and the op-1f today. I’ve been trying to get midi over USB to work between the two devices last year, but without any success.
I just tried it again and got at least part of it working now (sequencing the op-1f with the m8).
Here’s how I’ve done it.

  1. Connect the op-1f to the m8 via USB.
  2. Turn on the op-1f.
  3. Set the op-1f to receive midi note data on channel 1.
  4. Go to the screen that shows all connected midi devices on the op-1f.
  5. Turn on the m8.
  6. It will show up as a connected device on the op-1f. Set the midi note data to out on this screen. The options to change these settings will disappear if you leave this screen, or at least this is the case for me.
  7. Create a new phrase on the m8 using a midi out instrument that’s set to send on midi channel 1.

I haven’t gotten it to work the other way around and I can’t figure out why. Would be nice to use the op-1f to input notes into the m8, but no dice. However, sequencing the op-1f via the m8 is a bit more useful to me anyway, so I’m glad I figured that out.

Do you a link for discord?

I had a chance to try out a friends M8 and it was cool. But I’m not really a tracker guy.
