Cheers, this made me double check and it was indeed my bank blocking the payment. Just pre-ordered!
Iāve always loved LSDj and its community but never really got involved myself. I had a brief phase where I was obsessed with LGPT, which was an LSDj inspired tracker for handhelds. This looks like the device of my teenage dreams. Really excited to be supporting this project.
Thanks for sharing this. It looks like all of the most important parts of sample editing are there⦠Iām assuming that waveforms arenāt visualized and that all sample editing is implemented with numerical values?
There is another screen for sample editing with the waveform view. These screenshots are from an older version as an āEDITā would appear to the right of the sample name.
Iāve been reading up on the m8 and watching videos for the last few hours. Itās really not practical for me to get this device since I already own a Polyend Tracker (which I love), but it looks really powerful and is decidedly more portable. I initially bought the Tracker with the idea that I would take it with me outside, capturing and composing everywhere I went, but unfortunately the screen isnāt very legible outdoors. Iām curious how the m8ās screen fares in outdoor environments?
So I preordered the m8. I made plenty of valid cases to myself for why I shouldnāt buy one, but I have no willpower. Iām just so curious- maybe this is the portable sampler/music maker Iāve been looking for?
The m8 might not be intended for someone like me (someone who mostly makes ambient music and sound collage), but I have a feeling its audio streaming capabilities, battery, and overall portability could be really useful when Iām on foot. I also love fm synthesis and the possibility of using the braids emulator.
ā¦dreaming of a portable music setup in an abandoned industrial zone or by a stream in the mountainsā¦
Iām not sure if itās for me either, but Iām convinced Iām going to have a great time finding out
It also doesnāt hurt that it just looks cool as hell. If I decide weāre not simpatico and I need to sell it, I just need to take a photo to get people interested on Reverb.
I was thinking the same thing. I feel like with a lot boutique gear that has a healthy following, thereās less of a risk in trying it out- if you donāt gel with it, and the supply of the thing canāt keep up with its demand, then you can easily sell it on reverb and get your money back.
Iāve got an M8 and can confirm that it is excellent for ambient music making. Each of the synth engines have lots of possibility and the fact that neither of the two envelopes are tied to amplitude means that itās really easy to get drones going and then use note events to trigger the envelopes to modulate other parameters. Once you get your head around tables, theyāre really powerful too for evolving modulations.
Add to that an ability to add in whatever samples you want - found sounds, drones, chordal pads - and youāre off to the races. Iād also say that the internal reverb is pretty nice for getting big lush ambiences when you set it to have almost no damping.
My two main uses for mines thus far have been to do lofi hiphop stuff and then ultra minimal ambiences like you might here on Raster-Noton for example.
The FM synth is really good too, itās very cleverly mapped and works so well within the tracker workflow - I always wanted a great FM synth with table automation!
Hereās the full wav if anyone wants to take a deep listen. Straight out of the M8 with some minor treatment.
Damn @Ess, that sounds really solid. Canāt believe thatās just a single channel.
Iāve got a Teensy 4.1 on the way to run it headless (using your PC and keyboard instead of standalone). Definitely excited to try out all the different synthesis options it comes with.
Iāve been reading more about the tables function on the m8. Iāve never worked with trackers before Polyendās so this is a new idea to me. It sounds like it could be pretty powerful⦠Are you able to use tables to modulate parameters on samples, or is it just for the built in synths?
Yes, any parameter that can be placed in the sequencer can be placed in a table. Not all of them are useful, but theyāre all there.
Think of a table as being a mini sequencer for each instrument, that can run much faster than the song speed, or be put into a mode where it only advances one step every time the instrument is triggered. This can allow for all kinds of envelopes, LFOs, arpeggios, pseudo-S&H stuff, etc.
