M8 Tracker

Tim said at some point he was hoping to include a zip cover, but i’m not sure where that stands.

I almost pulled the trigger on this multiple times today. The design looks super polished, I just have no experience with trackers.

I fully endorse you’re pricing. If it would have been mere 450$ I would have been all aboard… well now I’m almost aboard :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:.

Your work is seriously impressive both hardware and software. So congratulations!

What’s the max pattern length again?

Does recording incoming MIDI to a pattern work like Sunvox, in the sense that Sunvox doesn’t need to know the pattern length? Sunvox just keeps recording and recording until you stop feeding it MIDI.

Also, what’s the difference between pattern and phrase?

Very interested in one of these, although trackers have never really been my “thing.” I wonder if the preorders are unlimited so I can do a bit more research or if I should just go for it and sell it if it doesn’t click with me? Tough decision because like someone else in the thread says, it really does kinda remind me of a handheld monomachine, albeit with a tracker interface…

It reminds me of one too! I love my Monomachine.

A phrase is only 16 steps long, you use a chain to link phrases together to create what I would call a pattern. The song plays a chain number per track, the chain contains phrases (with optional pitch transpose per phrase), phrases contain notes and effect commands.

Chain is a list of up to 16 phrases, so I guess in the pattern analogy that would be 256 steps max per pattern.

This sounds more confusing than it is in practice. There is the old quickstart guide that probably explains it better. It was made for the beta unit so it’s not up to date for the physical changes of the production unit but check out page 4 for a better breakdown: https://dirtywave.com/M8/M8QuickStartGuide_v00.pdf

Wow, thank you for the clarification. Direct from the creator! Shouldn’t you be popping some Cristal to celebrate pre-orders opening up?

Do you already have everyone you need for writing the full manual?

Do you have a rough idea when pre-orders will ship? And/or will we have the option to change shipping address before they do?

I’m desperate to preorder but am moving in a month

are you considering to do some accessories like a cover, bag and stuff like that?
That would be super cool and super useful!

Welp I decided to order one… should be a nice way to mix things up. Is it more or less feature complete at this point?

I might be interested in commissioning someone to help. I know the design style I want to work around, but the time is going to be an issue!

Shipping starts in July. Yes if you need to change your shipping address the process (I believe in the product description on the store) is to add the new address to your account and send a customer support email so I can update the order.

Wow, it’s instant GAS for me looking at the videos, but extra costs put it outside of my “instabuy” range: 45$ shipping to France + 20% VAT (+ transporter costs for import duties) makes the total > 600$ / 500€, have to think twice for what would be my couch/travel toy.
Not saying that’s expensive though, as it’s about the price of an OPZ and I can definitely see the M8 stand up to it.

I have a few questions about it, as the main website is lacking some details IMHO:

  • Is the battery removable/replaceable?
  • Is there a volume dial somewhere? Didn’t see one
  • What’s the max song length, 255?
  • What type of USB does it use? USB-C?
  • Does it support USB-midi? USB host? Would love to be able to plug something like a nanokey/nanokontrol to it on the go.
  • Does it support sampling on the go? Does it have a mic for standalone sampling like a PO33?
  • Is the main output loud enough to play along other devices, without too much noise?
  • Can you use the audio input as a sync in for playing along PO/Volca?

Thanks for the answers, this little beast is really interesting and I love the story behind it, being a programmer/tinkerer myself :slightly_smiling_face:

I can answer a few from having watched some of the meet-up videos -

  • Production units will be Micro USB. The plan was to use USB C but it had to be changed due to unavailability of chips, I believe production units will include a stock Teensy board.
  • Pretty sure it does MIDI via USB, not sure about host. But it does have TRS MIDI in/out and it is now switchable between type A and type B.
