It’s a useful option for whatever works best st the time. Suppose your pattern is already full but you do have a mod slot free. Same argument you made about space then.

It doesn’t occur to you that moving STA can pan it through a sample etc?

What do memory constraints have to do with it?

For what I’m doing at the moment, I’d like to apply a drunk lfo to STA. can anyone suggest an elegant solution to get the exact same behaviour with rep, rnl etc?

a table column beginning by STAxx and followed by RNDxx like
00 STA7F
01 RND7F
02 HOP01
control timing with TICxx at the end of the column
if TIC01 are too big steps try TICff and if TICff is too fast try spacing between the STA RND HOP ?
i do it quite often with ambient sound i don’t know if it is gonna give the result you expect but it gets close to what you ask for .?.?.

edit: sorry i think i messed up and this thing above doesn’t work … what i often do is play with loop start with a repetitive playmode …

I’m not sure you’d consider it elegant, but you could use internal midi to effect the start. It take two tracks, but it’s not hard to achieve. I do it with samples like vocal phases and then resample them so I can go back to using one track.

I’ve tried internal midi to delay params etc. it’s ok for some things but the midi 1.0 limit would be really steppy for say moving a playhead.

I’ll stand by my thought that STA would be a really useful mod destination. It seems like such a general use case, to not have it, and instead have loop start. Not sure why.

In general I find it quite odd that there doesn’t seem to be a rising clamour for 2.0. It inhibits a number of things I’d like to do between machines ; nrpn not available on some and a bit of a pain to implement anyway.

Re midi, at the least I’d like to see interpolation as standard on all boxes, as I believe is possible with some modular gear. A good use of all the extra processing power now available. I reckon

I recently read that some elektrons do interpolate incoming midi? I haven’t investigated it yet.

Honestly, no. A sample might loop many times, in whatever direction, but it only starts once per trigger.

Regardless, what I would do is a modified version of what tomasoma suggested: TIC00 table, STA in Column 1, RNL in Column 2, HOP00 on row 01 in both columns. That way, each new trigger gets a new start

Slicing could offer a reasonable workable alternative to Sample Start Modulation.

The M8 model 2 comes with a little hex driver. Unscrew the case screws on the back and you can lift the front cover off, exposing the screen and main board. The screen is not attached to the case.

With the front cover removed, gently blow a little compressed air from the edge of the screen to see if you can dislodge the grain.

When I started with M8 I would noodle out melody ideas on an OP-1 and then enter the notes into the M8. The more I used the M8, the better I got at keeping the melody in my head and note entry became much easier until I no longer needed the OP-1.

As for breaking out of a loop, the deep-clone feature is good for that. Copy your loop and paste the chains below the original loop, then deep-clone those chains. Then you can enter the new chains and move/change notes as needed to integrate on your idea without changing the original.

I think you don’t really understand what STA is here. If it’s being modulated by an LFO, as is the subject of the conversation, it would be the position of the playhead in the sample on an ongoing basis, not just on a trigger. I’d like the option to move it with drunk, as I said.

I suppose if you’re being really pedantic then it’s always starting to play at a given moment in time, but it’s too hot to get into ruminatiions about the nature of time and living in the present.

My point about it being useful to have the option of modulating it from another location than the pattern stands. Those 3 columns fill up quick and tables are steppy.

I said STA would be a useful mod destination. It’s hardly along the lines of wanting a digitakt to be an Mpc or one of the other common examples.

How far into tables are you? Tell me something outlandish you do with it.

I use slices a lot to jump around but I’m thinking it would be steppy compared to an lfo modulating smoothly? Do you have a method to avoid that?

Thanks managed to do it, but yeah sadly its on the screen itself.

New screens are super cheap. Like, cheaper than buying a pack of glass screen protectors. If it’s annoying that much, you could always swap in a new screen quite easily.

Not sure how really as there’s no documentation and not sure how to remove the screen it self?. Looks sealed?

STA is start position of a sample. It doesn’t claim to be anything else. I understand your desire to modulate the position of the playhead, to “scrub” dynamically, in effect. I think this would be more difficult given the way the M8 is constructed. It does not keep samples in a large RAM buffer; it streams them directly from disk. Only a few SD cards work with M8 due to this decision, but it means that there is no sample size restriction, which would be crippling given the amount of RAM on the Teensy. I’m not privy to the internal workings of the firmware, and I could be completely wrong, but I don’t see this as being an easy update.

No it wouldn’t? That’s not how STA works. Not sure why you’re getting so heated over this tbh, you can achieve a similar effect by setting a short loop time and modulating loop st, if that’s still not enough then better use an octatrack.

You can modulate loop start.
