I really like the look of the minifreak but I don’t need a keybed or sequencer. So maybe I’m paying for stuff I don’t need/want.

I’d pay the same amount for the Mini if it didn’t have the sequencer. Some of the engines provide sculpting abilities I’ve never found on any other synth. Plus, the sequencer is nice for sound design. Make a quick sequence in the vibe you’re going for and let it loop while you design the patch. The macro ribbons are another huge plus for soundscapes.

You could also start with some Korg Volcas, which are super cheap and easy to use. Not very durable, though. Don’t twist those knobs too hard.
Not wrong at all. 8U/19” is large by today’s standards, but still reduced compared to the OG.
In practice, the space is something to appreciate.

Do you currently score films?
I’m not sure why you would want ‘cheap’ but ‘does it all’ and look to hardware as the answer. If you’re doing sound design, software is going to be your best option. If this is a business decision then this should be approached as a tool with return-on-investment.

You’re selling it! thanks. Out of interest - and I’m sure I can find this out elsewhere, but as you’re here - any great advantages of the mini over the micro? (apart from the keyboard)

No i don’t score films. I want to make sound effects that are weird. I’m not Hans Zimmer. Low cost modules are more than adequate, I just need a few oscillators, some LFOs, filters etc. But thanks for your opinion.

Polyphony is the big one for me. I bought the Micro first and just couldn’t get on with it. Traded it in then bought the Mini a few months later when I saw some videos on the granular update. Was blown away as soon as I turned it on. The sounds I go for are ripped speaker/dirty doom bass, dissonant strings, and noisy pads for soundscapes, and this synth can do it in spades. And I’ve barely scratched the surface. I have Rolands and Korgs that give me those Roland and Korg sounds. The Hydrasynths, specifically the Explorer come close to the MiniFreak, but I find it easier to get the sounds I want out of the Mini than my Hydra. The Korg Multi/Poly is another suggestion of mine, but it’s more expensive. Phenomenal for soundscapes due to the four part multitimbrality, but a few hundred dollars more.
Edit: The keybed on the Mini is one of the best mini keys I’ve ever played. topped only by the Hydra Explorer (due to poly at).
I just bought a 12D for £340 second hand, so could work. I see DM6’s for £260
Sonicware a good shout - their texture machine looks really interesting for my purposes. Polyend prob too expensive for me.

Start buy buying some Volcas and Behringers that appeal to you.
Volca FM2 contains many lifetimes of strange textures for under two bills.
Behringer has replicated a ton of great classic synths, so just go to YouTube and listen to them to see what appeals.
You can get good deals on the Syntrx Mk1, I’ve got one and absolutely love it. But the Behringer K2 will do most of what the Syntrx does for less and takes up less desk space.
The trouble with asking for advice here is eventually everything will be recommended. Check prior recommendation threads for proof and more ideas.
To some extent, asking “which synth” is like asking who to date, or what underwear to buy. It’s a very personal question that can only really be answered by doing the hard work of trying out some options first.
