Yeah I like the look of all these synths - Crave, Grind, Edge and the other one (forgot). Why the Grind?
Cost is great! but probably too limited. I want a really wide scope of sound design. Think David Lynch!
Love these - but cost might be an issue.
So no recommends then?
Mayyybe, quite fancy an analogue if i can, with patch points. Wanna get messy and create happy accidents.
Behringer Kobol seems like a good time.
Behringer arp 2600 probably would fit the bill… if that’s too much the maybe there ms20 clone.
I have plenty but I dont think its exactly helping as your requirements arent restricting the coice of synth.
If someone asks you to recommend a car on four wheels that can go 100 km/h, youd probably tell that person to buy the car he likes best because any car does that.
if you want happy accidents, you should probably go for something semi modular.
from that point on its a matter of taste pretty much.
you could start with some deep and free soft synth like vital and “learn”/think about what you actually need and want, what is a must, unnecessary and so on.
maybe you really want ADSR envelopes instead of ADR, maybe you need onboard FX, a certain amount of oscillators, a dedicated noise osc, monophonic, paraphonic, polyphonic…
Because of the countless amount of sounds and it is sort of semi modular
Crave and Edge are completely different.
Go classic, get a Korg M1 ![]()
I wouldn’t actually recommend this, though iOS with some AUv3s could be a solid option. AUv3s are way cheaper than VSTs
if your choice for design/filmmaking is not limited to R2d2 sounds then you will have problems with the mono synth)
I think a mono synthesizer is the worst choice for a film composer/designer)
if you need unexpected textures, strange sounds landscapes drones and endless amount of strange background sounds + basic sounds for musical parts then you need something like Korg Wavestate.
you can generate infinite number of random patches
even if we compare the wavestate vst version with other VST, it is still a great choice for composers all in one
haha I love how making music is such a deep rabbithole … even if you choose Behringer.
Even when going the software route.
Just prepare to enter a rabbit hole. Back out if you don’t wanna face reality that this will suck a lot of money out of your pockets. There is no 100€ device that will make you happy eventually. It just won’t happen. That’s why we gathered here in this forum …to cope with this addiction ![]()

So decide … red or blue pill?
I really like this recommendation. B2600 in particular with stereo spring reverb if you get the Blue Marvin or Grey Meanie, or digital spring verb on the X-mas light version.
3 VCOs, external input that can amp a dynamic mic, or re-amp your external signal for crunch goodness. It’s a legit Swiss Army knife of a box of synth with larger than life sounds when sought out.
Plus, it should be available cheaply especially if you can find it on the used market. New ones were recently selling for less than $500.
Lol same guy on gumtree has a Behringer Pro 800 for cheap too!
Hardware wise I’d suggest the Arturia MiniFreak. I’m continually blown away by its depth. The synth engines are vast. Three fx slots that can go in any order. Reverb before distortion. Free VST that really helped me learn the synth. Plus the stellar version is dope!
Software wise I hate to say it, but Native Instruments.
Thanks. Getting plenty of nice recommends from other people here, but appreciate your advice. I’m going DAWless so softsynths are out.
Going DAWless - hence asking about hardware synths only.
Ok great insight thanks. The SFX I’m thinking of making are more textural, David Lynch dream/nightmare type sounds that a monophonic synth would be very capable of making. I already have a nice collection that I made with Zeon (iOS synth), but I want a hardware instrument to do them now. The Behringer collection really appeal to me for this reason. Analogue. Simple. Pure.
I dunno - i’m trying to be specific and not go for a model that does everything. Just looking for a synth with basic potential, I think I’m spoilt for choice - hence asking people what their favs are.
Great! I’ll check them out - I like the sound of this. Basic. Powerful. Weird.
Just looked - way too big! haha. Was hoping for a little box for portability.
