Logic Pro X (Session View update) vs. Ableton Live

Already have that turned on, still no checkbox… :frowning:

Darn. That’s all I can think of to try. Maybe somebody else has another suggestion.

That’s a feature I’ve really enjoyed and used a lot with Ableton. I’m pretty sure Ableton will set tempo if it’s the first thing you do when opening up a fresh project but could be wrong.

My guess it IS disabled for demo. You could spend 3 months making a sample lib for free.

I dunno. Kinda standard for demos to disable save or inject noise every ‘X’ seconds.
Is there no list of disabled features for the demo?

AFAIK, the Logic demo is full-featured. Nothing disabled.

I always associated the autosampler with hardware synths or making instruments out of your iOS synths, but didn’t realize that you could even do it to your software synths until I saw this video. While it could of course be used for sketchy purposes, it actually seems like it could be good for saving a few favorite patches off of a software synth that you own but don’t want the whole thing on your computer anymore or you are worried about it not being supported in future OS upgrades.

Just to be clear, you’re not saving from the Autosampler. Once you’ve run autosampler:

1 - make a new track
2 - load Sampler
3 - choose ‘Autosampled’ from the dropdown menu.
4 - In this menu you will find your Autosampled instruments
5 - Load your sampled instrument
6 - ‘Save a a copy as’.

I just tried it and saved off a nice set of A4 patches. All .aif, 24bit, 44.1kHz.

Thank you will try this!

Unfortunately logic won’t work for the main purpose of my auto sampling, which is to use them on my BlackBox. It does not embed the root note on the files, also it can’t export to wav files which will add two steps, set the root note as well as converting to wav.

In this regard SampleRobot 6.5 is superior as it can cater to just about any format and output. But it’s also a very specific tool.

For auto sampling within logic and use it the auto sample seems to do a good job for sure!

Well…theory out window.

Anyone noticed stability issues with loops/cells?

Was having a play last night with stock Logic instruments. Logic really didn’t like changing an instrument while a cell was playing and would do a weird crash where the sound would stop but transport controls would still appear to work and then the little rainbow ball of death would appear and you’d need to force quit. Happened maybe 5 or 6 times last night. Going to try to recreate again when I get a chance. I really like working this way in Live where I’d nail a pattern down that I like but play around with different sounds on the fly so hopefully just a little bug to squash.

And is it just me or does Logic make it a little bit difficult to overdub midi into an existing cell? Could just be my Logic rustiness but definitely seemed a little more awkward vs Live.

Did anyone had troubles updating Logic? I´m running macbookpro 2018 with 10.4.6 Mojave and 7gb free disk space. Apple update appstore app always cancles the update with “the update could not be finished” withoug any further notice … hm.

Is it possible to record live into step sequencer like the Elektrons?

I think it might indeed be that the space left is not considered big enough by the installer. MBP 2018 is still new and 10.4.6 works.

Looks like some more trouble. I also can not update or reinstall other apps from the appstore.

Well at least it’s not your MBP vs Logic now… Have you tried logging out of your Apple ID and signing in again?

A couple things I noticed reading through this thread.

Ableton easier to use than Logic? It’s gotta be a workflow thing because I feel like Logic is so much easier to figure out, it’s silly. I’ve also been using it for a long time. I wished I would’ve tried Ableton a long time ago because at this point, I find it a bit impenetrable. I also do very little electronic stuff ITB. Mostly recording, editing and mixing.

I read someone describing Logics new step sequencer as ‘Elektron on steroids.’ Maybe I haven’t figured out the new step sequencer well enough because while I think it’s pretty cool and super fast, I still think my OT is more advanced in many ways. LFO’s and effects per step being a pretty huge thing.

I think you’ve answered your own question!

It took me a little while to get used to Ableton after years of GarageBand and Logic, but now I find it way faster.

One of these days I might take the plunge

I’m with you. Long time Logic. Tried Ableton many times. I think it’s just a matter of not suiting my eye.

Like Ping golf clubs. Great club. Can’t hit em…they are ugly to me. If the club doesn’t inspire, can’t hit it.

It took me ages to click with Ableton. Was far too used to “traditional” DAWs and a heavy Sonar user 10-15 years ago. But it did click eventually and then the flip side happened - traditional DAWs are the confusion!

Having said that, I’m getting round Logic ok. There is lots under the hood. Much more than in Live IMO but getting round the front facing stuff is getting easier.

Once Apple and 3rd party plugin devs squash the bugs I think 10.5 is gonna be superb. And presuming they continue to develop and fine tune things, it’s going to be an interesting journey with Logic.
