Thanks for the reminder that I need to dig out my Raspberry Pis and setup PiHole again.
This is good information
I updated the OS but hadnāt even downloaded the Library Manager yet
yoooooo
The Effect Operator, I guess I misunderstood what this is. After investigation, itās basically insert fx per OSC/OP. This is quite usable. Being able to EQ a single oscillator is powerful for sound design. And using effect operator for drive per OSC reminds me of the finer benefits of my Pro 2ās OSC to filter routing capabilities.
Opsix was giving me pseudo nord modular vibes before, but now itās gone and fully done it. Between all the filter types, waveforms, operator modes, fx options, sequencer tricks, key tracking sprinkled all around the synth, virtual patch (mod matrix), I havenāt touched my other synths since I got it.
Donāt get me wrong, those arenāt going anywhere. But there is so much to explore with the Opsix. Deep yet accessible. And having the native plugin for doing it while I am away from the hardware is a nice bonus, definitely worth the $49 cross grade.e
Got all the new Sound Librarian presets loaded up
Really amazing collection of sounds - most of them have pretty great sequences for instant hands free tweakage too
Really interesting to see how some of them are implemented
Comb Dulcimer for example
Man this synth does everything - 100% keeper
sell uz yer opsix Cocker
Not a chance of it pidger
only had it a week
bastid
enjoy. I forsee one in my near future
I want that Modwave now as well
God help me
Comb Dulcimer was one of the first presets I added to my Favorites.
Yeah, I suspect several participants on this thread check every day for news of a Modwave selloff
True! That interface looks the best of the series
Unfortunately I didnāt get mine in the selloff
EU citizen here
But I did have a gifted ā¬250 voucher for Thomann
me wantz opsix naooowwww
I actually got mine from somebody on eBay, so I paid more than $330. Still worth the money imo.
I thought I wanted the modwave more⦠since I use the Opsix as more of a 6-carrier, subtractive synth., seems like Modwave would be more ideal. Certainly more knobby for subtractive parameters. Bonus FX, bonus modulation.
But the more I looked at it, those particular *bonuses are just formatted differently on the opsix. Instead of opsix operator modes (per oscillator filter, fm with feedback, wave folder, etc), you get additional LFOs on modwave. Instead of opsix insert fx aka effect operator mode, you get an extra master fx on modwave. Instead of dual filter on modwave, you can have a filter on select oscillators before the main filter on opsix.
The bitimbral capability on the modwave is attractive, but opsix has so much key tracking sprinkled throughout that it can be used like a 6 track groove box, thanks to per oscillator ADSR.
And Iāve managed to get some pseudo wavetable sweeping sounds by modulating the wavefolder operator mode. Doesnāt look like the Modwave has that Saw HD, sadly, but surely sample import overcomes this.
Real glad this opsix deal happened because it turns out, for my needs, to be a more interesting synth. Definitely way different than anything else I have, where as the Modwave wouldnāt be as distinguished. Itās also really fun to have a couple SAWs on 1,2, and some drawbar style organ tones when combined on 3,4,5,6.
I see both of these synths for around $550-$600 lately. Definitely worth it. The shared features like the filter models and FX algorithms are all quite serviceable.
One of the surprises for me too was the drum kit presets, with some keys mapped to kicks, others mapped to snares, etc. I assumed monotimbral meant you can only have one drum sound per preset, but I had not considered the magic of key tracking.
I had also misunderstood the effect mode before actually getting my hands on the synth. I had even read the release notes/marketing materials on the 2.0 firmware when they put the the effect mode and still didnāt quite understand its flexibility.
As you said, EQing individual operators is a great tool. Iām also enjoying adding comb filters and distortion into the FM chain, which is probably a really obvious way to use it ā there are so many other ways to the use effect mode though, especially considering we can create a custom algorithm and mix it with other modes.
I still havenāt gone deep into any presets, factory or otherwise. Iāve been trying to approach this in a ātabula rasaā fashion, to see what I come up with without too many influences. But Iām probably going to start dissecting some other peopleās patches soon, because thereās surely plenty stuff I havenāt thought of doing yet
Video guide to the sequencer, including Korgās approach to plocking. Donāt forget to turn on subtitles.
Iām wondering if youāre still using it in the fashion after some time with it. Personally, I definitely got it for the FM, but was just playing around with a patch where I basically used it as a subtractive VA synth with 6 oscillators and made some sounds I was very happy with.
Iām curious ā when you use it as a subtractive synth, which algorithm(s) do you use? Any of the built-ins or a custom algo? And are you using a mix of the engines, like effect, ring mod and wave-folding? In my experimentation I was using a combination of filter mode and wave-folding. Filter mode seems to be a great way to approach this as a VA, because you can basically get 7 filters if you want.
I guess now that the novelty has worn off a little bit for me, Iām just starting to explore patches where no FM synthesis is happening, and realizing how this instrument would still be a total powerhouse even if it couldnāt do FM synthesis at all.
