I did a bit of a test recording and was really surprised at how good the low quality setting sounds. It really imparts some nice character IMHO. Here are some drums. The first 6 seconds are the original, after that is the lo-fi version. Pretty crunchy in an old school sampler kind of a way. You’ll need headphones of course. Cue the “MPC60, SP1200 Killer” clickbait videos
I haven’t owned anything Korg aside from Volcas in a long time. Do they do much in the way of feature updates? I’d really love it if they expanded on the looper a bit considering how cool it is turning out to be, despite being barebones.
I’d say Korg is a bit like Roland, regarding updates.
They don’t usually do QoL updates on every bit of gear. But the more a piece sells, the more the community is active, the more it tries to address things.
I guess they are in a « don’t fix it if it ain’t broken/fixing updates costs money » kind of deal.
But I’d say the mK2 is probably gonna benefit from a few updates now that it is fully digital. The UI, the usb-C, the pitch correction algo, etc. These usually need to be fixed when they can’t keep up with new other softwares/OS.
Tempo seems to be saved per patch (it’s in the arp settings) so it makes sense it would change when you change patches. Does the manual state that tempo lock is a global setting?
I saw something somewhere about locking before changing synth patches to avoid jumps.
Edit: It was in the looper section of the Loopop video. I just noticed that he mentions that the looper didn’t stay in time with external clock, so it might just be that they don’t have the loop clock tight yet, which would explain why I notice drift on patch changes even when tempo is locked (not that I midi’ed it up).
There is a Function button on the main screen. Hold that and you will see Trophy as an option. You can cursor over the trophies and hit “Info” to see what it was for.
Really hoping you like the synth! I got lost in mine again last night. I turned it on to try something and got lost in a patch for about an hour.
I just got mine. I like it so far. The color reminds me of a dark grey. I placed my hearing protection in flat dark earth next to it for color comparison.
For anyone that plans to sample the loops made on the microKORG 2, a person on GearSpace helped me solve the pop/click problem I was having when sampling loops. I wrote about it here:
I have made some great sounding patches this week. The most synth sound design I’ve ever done in my life. Still having loads of fun. I’m excited for more people to start getting them as I want to hear what people make.
Edit: Darn, I’ve found some things still giving me some slight pops. Gonna have to experiment more, but still very useable for me. Definitely don’t want to mislead anyone.
Edit: Doh, I’m a moron. It does work. I didn’t have the BPM set right when I sat down a second time. Here are a couple of loops back to back to prove to myself I’m not crazy. Nothing special, but no clicks. Just sampled straight from MicroKORG looper into P6, and then loop button turned on.
Editing patches on this is actually super smooth and has been a very nice experience. It does sort of feel like your playing a video game.
I must say though, my first impressions of the build quality were not that great, the knobs are pretty loose and toy like. Although after playing with it for a while, that can be overlooked, as it sounds really good.
Interesting. The knob resistance on mine feels pretty good, not too stiff or too loose. The keyboard has really grown on me as well. I like the keyboard a lot. The jumping knob values really needs to be addressed though. Hopefully soon!
I’d like to see a firmware update to address some other things. I like the looper a lot, but the timing of the clock still feels a bit off to me. I’ve noticed some clicks in the middle of a loop before, which just seems weird. Not even sure how that would happen. It could also benefit greatly from some added functionality.
As you said though, it’s just such a fun synth to program. Really enjoying it still.
The knobs on mine are terrible. One of them you can feel sort of clunking around when you push it. Like a very serious wobble. It seems to work fine, but it’s not very nice. The others are not too inconsistent, but it’s noticable.
I also sort of hoped the limited edition aluminum knob would feel a little nicer, but it basically feels like plastic.
Seems like some build variation maybe. The main selector knob on mine has a slight amount of play, but not too bad. The other knobs are all pretty good. I have the standard edition, not sure if that matters.
Accurate Beats noted in his review that there were different gaps on his keys, but I don’t have that either. He also noted that key pressure felt off to him. I went in and adjusted the velocity curve on mine as soon as I got it, because I was worried about what he said, and I don’t have any issues. I almost wondered if he got a preproduction one.
The keys on mine seem really responsive. I’m not a great keys player, but it seems to me you can get some nice nuances in the playing. For instance just brushing the keys slightly vs digging in deep for the electric piano and organ sounds.
That’s unfortunate. I got the white special edition and all the knobs on mine feel quite nice. I agree they’re pretty easy to turn, but for me that’s a positive. I agree about the big aluminum knob, it feels a bit cheap but if I’m honest I didn’t notice until you pointed this out and I specifically examined it.
Sorry, didn’t mean to rag too hard on the SE big knob, haha.
The rest of my knobs did feel pretty good. Maybe almost a little springy?
Anyways, I ended up sending mine back, due to the 1st knob being too crappy, but I think I’ll buy another one.
I haven’t put together a list but off the top of my head:
Option to trigger record when a volume threshold is reached since you can loop outside audio. This would enable clean start points for tight loops, like if you are recording a drum break to play over or to process through the lofi audio engine.
Option to automatically stop recording when the loop reaches the end of the measure to avoid recording over the start of your loop.
Better crossfade implementation. When sampling the loops I’ve made, I can often get clean loops without pops/clicks with the method described previously, but there are still some cases where that doesn’t work. I’ve also had random pops/clicks in the middle of a loop.
Review the tightness of the clock. Loopop mentioned loops not syncing to external gear, and I feel like the timing sometimes still drifts even when tempo locked. Also when trying to loop arpeggios sometimes it’s not a clean loop when it comes back around.
The beat stutter thing in its current form is close to useless. That needs to be better developed or rethought completely. The reverse option is the only thing on there that I can imagine using.
Rather than the beat stutter thing, which is kind of a played out effect anyway, I would like to be able to run the finished loops through the onboard effects to manipulate them further for sound design or live performance. This would really open the looper up to creative stuff.
If I’m dreaming, it would be nice for the overdubs to be on different layers so the sound levels could be adjusted after they are recorded. If they did this you could also drop layers in and out, which would be awesome for building up stuff to sample or for live performance.
Further dreaming: The two lofi audio modes are a great idea. They could take this a step further by offering variable bit rates like on the Roland SP-303 and P-6 to really go after the lofi market.
Besides import/export, it would be cool if you could save loops to each of the 8 step buttons to recall later if there is enough internal memory.
Hi All,
Just got a new Microkorg 2 home.
Seems like there is software bug.
When I set to dual timbre mode and select timbre 2 for editing, all the knobs have reduced range.
I can only choose 2 waves or not the full range of say shape or tuning like all knobs have reduced range.
The Dec & Inc buttons under the screen work fine and I can select everything correctly there.
Could somebody else see if their microkorg 2 has the same issue please?
I cannot find a way in the Uk to leave a bug report on Korg website. any ideas please?
I have the latest firmware installed. V1.02
Noticed knobs working ok when timbre 2 edit is lit but I am on home page, so the assigned knob page. Problem is only when actually trying to edit timbre using six page buttons and knobs under Timbre edit when timbre 2 edit is lit.
