Korg Kaoss Replay

Come on Korg…

All I’ve wanted was a Kaoss Pad Quad, with midi and maybe sampling like the KP3+

Maybe for 500

I’m disappointed by this and the micro usb is the cherry on top on the sadness sundae

With the Kaoss Replay and the Drumlogue I want to propose that Korg are becoming the anti Elektron.

Elektron devices can initially seem lacking in bells and whistles and could be considered expensive for the relatively low spec. However when you use them they are so cleverly thought through and well made that they go beyond the spec into something which makes people love them and ensures solid residuals and a long life span.

Recent Korg devices initially seem amazing and incredibly powerful, but when you dive into them they are half baked and lack essential features and the workflow is so agonising that you will never utilise the potential that they have such that they can’t justify the price and end up dropping massively to a bargain bin price and ending up on Bad Gear.

Yep, if you’re buying a Korg device you better be happy with it the way it is. I say that as a fan of Korg, but they’re not like Elektron for updates.

Oh my goodness! I forgot about the lackluster Drumlogue!

I don’t think all of their products are disappointing. Opsix is still a fantastic synth after all.

But yeah, this and the Drumlogue were real doozies

The critical benefit here is that it has a simple workflow to record and playback eight banks of sixteen quantised audio clips. This makes building up a session or song really fun and easy just like in Ableton session view.

I’m amazed that sp404 still can’t do that, nor can MPC. Push is physically stupidly enormous. Blackbox sort of does it but with fussy menus. OT I love but complexity, it’s a different fish.

I dream of a great portable machine to capture and play quantised clips easily. This Korg might be the only option.

Akai force maybe?

Sold my Force because it was just too huge on the desk or sofa.

I’m amazed the right device doesn’t exist. I don’t want to use laptop or iOS loopy pro for assembling clips into songs. I want a device.

1K for this? you are kidding me

Same. When I saw the thread title, I came in with the innocence and eagerness of a child.

I saw the device picture- eh, but could be cool

Then I saw the price. Good golly! For a Kaoss Product?! Then I saw the functionality. Why would they do this? Why couldn’t they just focus on the niche of the Kaoss Pad and keep it in the affordable to moderate range?

Why does it NEED to be something to make full tracks on?

AND FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY WHY DOES IT REQUIRE A MICRO USB IN ADDITION TO A USB C?!

Even IF I were interested in this thing, I don’t think I could buy it out of principle. Having 2 USB cables connected to it would irritate me on a logical level.

I miss how I used to be back then. Those were good minutes.

I hope they make a stripped down version of this thing for cheaper(and remove the micro USB)

Is it just me? IS IT JUST ME?!

I get irritated when I have a portable monitor, and I’m missing my USB C cable so I have to plug into it using USB and HDMI

2 cables to the same 2 devices

I can’t even focus on my work, im too distracted thinking how stupid this monitor setup is

I’m with you! From the first pics I thought this was fake!

But it would be a rudimentary sequencer that would lead to complaints. :stuck_out_tongue: Personally I’d rather they just made a new clockable audio effects processor with all-new updated algorithms at half the price.

I get what you mean though, it is a hefty price which more bells & whistles would justify

I really hope they have enough cpu power in this unit to add a lot of more features. Today it seems this is a bad joke. Half the features for twice the price. Come on KORG…

I think Blackbox can do that.

Korg could have just made a Gadget for this but then again…do they even Gadget anymore?

Such a brilliant idea. Mediocre execution. Terrible support.

I don’t usually cheer for more negativity anywhere in the world, but if there is a single place that needs people being more negative or should I say “critical” it’s YouTubers who review launch products. I don’t mean some random dude who bought a synth 3 months after launch with his money and hates how it sounds and is now going on a rant. I’m talking “influencers” who receive review units from companies, like this video, actually having the guts to give a critical review.

The entire system is set up so that if you want to say anything overly critical, the chances are you’ll be cut off completely in future product releases. Though this happens with actual journalists for big companies, the difference is they can afford to simply buy the product for review and if a company cuts off say The Verge, the company is screwing themselves over from marketing. Unless you’re an absolutely massive YouTuber, saying anything overly critical is a massive risk. Which is why gear YouTube is filled with pure GAS inducing hyperbole in almost every single video, because their bullshit little lines at the start of the video that the video isn’t sponsored and they weren’t paid, means absolutely nothing when they’re afraid to piss off the hand that still feeds them.

That’s a long winded rant of me simply trying to say “cool video, glad he was honest”.

“No guys, this bad gear is actually pretty cool”

The lack of EQ on the pads renders this pretty useless for DJing. Akai/Denon could release something to mop the floor with this using their existing IP. The Denon Engine standalone DJ stuff is very good.
